Spring Cleaning Week: Tips from a Professional Organizer

The following is a guest post from Emily of Organization by Emily in Cumming, GA.

Top 5 Things to Focus on for Spring

For me, spring signifies renewal. So from an organizing perspective, I always look at it as a way to get back to basics, to simplify life and enjoy the feeling of hope that spring always instills in me. My top five tips for organizing and time management for the spring:

1. Figure out your values and priorities and then set appropriate goals. Write them down. Set SMART goals – specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.  Give yourself a deadline and write them in a conspicuous place where you can refer to them often.

2. Identify your most important relationships and focus on those people. Make a point to spend time with them. Strive for deeper relationships. Get rid of relationships that drag you down or aren’t fulfilling to you. You can consider this “emotional de-cluttering.”

3. Get active and be healthy! With nicer weather coming soon (fingers crossed!), it is the perfect time to get out from behind the computer screen and enjoy being outside. Learn tennis or golf (please! I need someone to play with.) As you lose weight, you can consider this losing “body clutter” (thanks to my mentor, flylady.net, for that term.)

4. Get involved in your community, whether it is through your church, one of your kid’s activities, or volunteering for a cause such as recycling. It makes you feel good to give back to the community. As you give to those less fortunate, you become more grateful for what you have and are more willing to part with unnecessary items in your home.

5. Be thankful that the world is so large and diverse that there is always something new to learn and no excuse to be bored. Pick up a book. Remember that every day is an adventure!

When you remember that life isn’t about the stuff you have but the friends you keep, you can pare down and simplify your life. I can help.  Give me a call!

Keys to Optimal Health – Tips from a Chiropractor

The following is a post from Contributing Writer, Dr. Kristin Marchman.  Dr. Marchman is a Licensed Chiropractor at Vickery Chiropractic in Cumming, GA.

Health.

It’s something we all strive for, but what does it truly mean?

The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”  We often think we are healthy if we aren’t “sick,” but what about the individuals that are perfectly “healthy” one day and the next day are diagnosed with cancer?  They weren’t “sick,” but it’s hard to say that they had been “healthy” when this life-altering disease had been growing within in them for months, perhaps years.

I consider there to be five important aspects to achieving optimal health.

The first is nutrition and hydration. What we put into our bodies affects our day-to-day energy and long-term health.  I am confident that most people know what they should be eating and drinking on a daily basis, it’s simply a matter of implementing it.

Next is exercise. Keeping our bodies moving is essential and I recommend that we all aim for 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity three to five days a week. Not only does it help our bodies physically, but it also aids in getting those positive endorphins flowing in our brains.

Though we don’t like to admit it, we all need a certain amount of rest to get through each day. Six to eight hours of sleep is extremely important and affects our health in numerous ways. Sleep is how we recharge and reenergize for the day ahead.

A positive mental attitude is crucial for our health.  Studies show our physical health is directly linked to our mental health.  Laughing, praying, and learning how to cope with stress are three activities that can make a huge impact on our health.

The final aspect to achieving health is one most people don’t think about, but deals with how the body functions. The brain and spinal cord are two of the first organs to develop in a growing fetus.  Why?  They are the two organs that coordinate and send signals to every other organ and muscle in the body.  Without the brain and spinal cord, none of our human functions would be possible.

Luckily, the brain is encased in a solid skull that can only be disturbed by great trauma.  The spinal cord is protected by our bony spine, but it, unfortunately, is much more vulnerable to injury.  Repetitive movements, falls, contact sports, twists and turns – all of these can cause the spine to misalign, putting pressure on the spinal cord or the nerves that exit between the vertebrae.

So, what can be done to keep the entire body functioning at the highest level by removing interference to the spinal canal? The answer is chiropractic – a safe, gentle, and effective form of treatment.  That is what I consider to be the final element to obtaining optimal health. I may be slightly biased, being a chiropractor myself, but I have seen chiropractic do amazing things and can say without a doubt that it will always be part of my journey towards optimal health.

Welcome!

My name is Mandi and I’ve lived in Cumming with my husband since 2003.  We are now raising our two young children here.  When I started looking for preschools and sport activities for our son, I remember being overwhelmed with trying to “google” everything under the sun just to find what I was looking for.  It seemed like it should be easier to find the places and things to do in Cumming than it was.  I’ve authored a personal blog for about three years and decided now was the time to start a second blog focusing just on my hometown of Cumming, GA.

The purpose of this site is two fold.  First I want it to be a great resource for residents and guests in Cumming.  If you live in the city I want this site to be a place you can come to and find good places to eat, places to shop, places to play and things to do.  If there’s a great event or a great deal I want you to know about it so we can all take advantage of it!

Secondly, I want this to be a great avenue for local small businesses to be highlighted, advertise, and reach their target market.  Most small businesses do not have the marketing resources to compete with their larger-national competitors.  This means without word-of-mouth it is often times hard to find small businesses right in our own city.    Consider this site, word-of-mouth online!

I will continuously be adding to the directory listings and would love your help with this!  If you have a favorite spot, event or deal that’s happening in Cumming, use our Contact Us Form and we’ll make sure it gets listed.

We have some really exciting giveaways coming up over the next few weeks, so you’ll want to make sure you stay up to date and check in often.  The easiest way to do this is:

So, join me on this adventure of “Becoming More Local” in Cumming, GA!
