Backyard Movie Nights: A Weekly Occurrence Because of Mosquito Joe

Backyard Movie Nights

Backyard Movie Nights: A Weekly Occurrence Because of Mosquito Joe

At our house, we are all about making memories during the summer. We have a unique situation because I (Rachael) work from home and my husband, Greg, is a teacher. For 5 1/2 weeks of the summer, we are all home together. This arrangement has had its challenges in years past, but this year has been different. The kids are getting older and we are able to do more things that we couldn’t before. This summer instead of going on a vacation, we decided to use some money to invest in items that will be used to make memories. One of those items was the equipment to do outdoor backyard movies. And after our first backyard movie night, the kids declared this MUST BE a weekly occurrence!

My favorite part is we are doing all cherished movies from Greg and I’s childhood. Movies like Lady & the Tramp, Free Willy, The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Peter Pan & many others are on our list. If you have a movie suggestion, please comment on this post and let me know! There is nothing better than our classic childhood movies!

In years past, we would never be able to do this. We had a serious mosquito problem that kept us from enjoying our backyard. You see we have a little creek behind our property that is a breeding ground for mosquitos. And well, mosquitos also love our blood so we all get destroyed if they are around. That was until we discovered Mosquito Joe and decided to prepare for spring and summer this year! Mosquito Joe’s motto is Make Outside Fun Again and that is exactly what they have done for us. Now we can sit outside for hours without getting a single bite. It’s quite amazing!

How Does Mosquito Joe Work

Mosquito Joe provides mosquito control treatment to residential and commercial customers. Their technicians are trained mosquito control experts dedicated to one thing: getting rid of mosquitoes so that you can enjoy being outside again. Outfitted with the latest gear and backed by the coordination of a top-notch support staff, their technicians in the field get the job done swiftly, thoroughly and professionally.

Take a look at their services to decide which one best suits your pest control needs:

  • Custom Barrier Sprays: Barrier spray mosquito treatments work right away – and keep working for weeks.
  • All Natural Treatments: An alternative to our barrier treatment, our all-natural service, repels mosquitoes immediately but has less adhesive properties than our synthetic spray.
  • Special Events: Your party, barbecue, wedding, reunion or any other outdoor event should be remembered for the good times, not the mosquitoes.

For more information or to get a personalized quote for your property, contact North Georgia Mosquito Joe at 770-809-3708.

Special Offer

I am excited to have a special offer to share with you, my readers! For your first spray, the cost would be $44.99 (up to 1/2 acre lot). All you have to do is register online and use the promo code –  cumminglocal.

How To Set Up Your Own Backyard Movie Night

First things first, you will need to buy a projector and a screen. Based off of price and reviews we choose the Vankyo projector and a portable 100-inch screen. It was super easy to set up. The projector can be hung from a screw or you can use the portable stand. We chose to hang the screen from a screw on our deck stairs. The projector was set up on a small stand and lifted up with books. The projector we purchased has connections for a kindle fire stick, HDMI cable, USB, or DVD cable. The options are endless to watch movies outdoors with this equipment!

QUICK TIP: We plan to purchase this projector stand to use for future movie nights.  It will make it easy to change the height of the projector.

As I mentioned before, we are doing classic childhood movies. Here are the ones we have on our list:

  • Chronicles of Narnia
  • Karate Kid
  • Back To The Future
  • Sandlot
  • Annie
  • The Never Ending Story
  • Mary Poppins
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Dumbo
  • Peter Pan
  • Swiss Family Robinson
  • Matilda
  • Flipper
  • Free Willy
  • Robin Hood
  • land Before Time
  • Duck Tales
  • Bed Knobs & Broomsticks
  • Pete’s Dragon

What classic movies would you add to our list?

How SwimKids Of Georgia Saved Sabine’s Life

Sabine started swimming at SwimKids of Georgia before she could walk. At 14 months she was taught to close her mouth and open her eyes under water, look for a hand target and flip on her back to float. She started kicking and walking at the same time about 2 weeks after her first lesson with Coach Nadyne.

“Bini” was comfortable in the water and enjoyed her time at swim lessons. Nadyne expertly taught Sabine to utilize the swim-float-swim method and the little girl had equal parts caution and confidence in and around the pool.

After several ear infections, Sabine had to take a break for a couple of weeks to have surgery. That was followed by a trip to South Africa which meant swimming lessons would be put on hold for two months.

While on vacation, Sabine enjoyed the warm summer weather on the South African coastline and spent most of her time on the beach building sand castles and eating ice-cream. Being the youngest of her cousins and family members her adventurous spirit prompted her to follow their lead. While enjoying a picnic next to the Blind River in Dana Bay (pictured at the bottom), Sabine, her brother, and cousin would run and jump into the shallow end of the river where it mouthed into the Indian Ocean. This was fun and the kids laughed as they each made a giant splash when sitting in the water.   The laughter was however very soon replaced with a panicked scream. There were only two kids visible and they were both frantically looking around for Bini. “Help” yelled Miguel. “Bini, Bini where are you, yelled her brother Julian. Sabine had ventured into the deep end of the river about 12 feet from where the grown-ups were sitting. Anyone that has ever been separated from their kid can tell you that seconds feel like hours. From under the dark water a smiling little faced popped up on her back floating, “I swimming” said Sabine. She flipped on her tummy and kicked to grab the hands of her cousin. “Again”, said Bini, “Let’s jump again”.

Sabine was 23 months old at the time and SwimKids of Georgia saved her life. Had it not been for the valuable life skill she had learned at 14 months this story could have been a very different tale with a very grim ending.

On behalf of the Meyer family, we would like to thank Nadyne and SwimKids of Georgia for making our kids safe around water. This is one of the biggest, most precious gifts I have been able to give my two children and urge all parents to invest in their children to learn how to float and swim-float-swim from a very early age.

Learn More About Nadyne Siegel-Brown (Owner) at SwimKids of Georgia:

Nadyne has been teaching aquatic survival since 1987, dedicating her life to saving children from drowning. Her focus is on teaching infants, toddlers, and young children proper survival skills and educating parents and caregivers on the layers of aquatic protection. Her passion is contagious, and most of her young students develop a love for swimming, which translates to a lifelong sport for health and well-being.

A message from Nadyne: Growing up in Central Florida, water has always been a huge part of my life. In 1986 I was introduced to aquatic self rescue for infants and toddlers when I enrolled my 18-month-old in such a program. I was a water baby and that’s what I wanted for my son. Watching Jacob’s aquatic transformation inspired me to become an instructor. Searching for a gentler and more comprehensive approach to teaching swimming, Aquatic Specialist of Atlanta and then SwimKids of Georgia was born. Today, I am continuously honing my skills by learning new and innovative ways of teaching swimming from other instructors in the aquatics field. My young students never cease to amaze me with their aquatic abilities and their love for the water.

Over the years, I have received calls and letters from parents whose children have experienced an aquatic accident. Whether at a pool, lake, or hot tub, parents are incredibly relieved to find that their children have saved themselves. “The lessons really work!” It also gives me great pleasure to see so many of my students move on to competitive swimming both on summer and year-round teams. The satisfaction gained from working with these children is the reward for all my efforts, and I look forward to waking up and going to work every day. I want to thank you for your interest in SwimKids of Georgia home of Infant Aquatic and I hope that you will take the steps to give your child the edge that could possibly save his/her life.

New Weekly Specials At Nido Cafe That You Must Experience Often

Recently, I did a poll on my instagram account asking readers to share with me their favorite place to go on a date. Most of us only think about Nido for coffee and breakfast. But their lunch and dinner offerings are exceptional as well.

This month it includes: Shrimp Ceviche, Smoked Salmon Salad, BLT, Coffee Ice Cream Pie. How fabulous do all of those sound? Now the real question is which do you try first?

Those new weekly specials at Nido have me wanting to go on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Ha! Ha! But I’m serious! Also, I will say If you have never been to Nido Cafe for a dinner service, I do recommend you try it out. My husband and I had a great experience dining on the patio. You can read about our experience and opinion on why you should go to Nido for dinner on this article – Nido Cafe: 5 Reasons To Go For Dinner This Weekend

More About Nido Cafe:

We all like to eat. Not just eat though, we like to escape and feel like we have left the country for a few hours. Food and wine can take you on a journey. We like that journey. It makes us happy when Atlanta traffic gets us down. So we look for a place to roll in, tell stories that likely aren’t true and laugh until its time to go home. So we built this place because we want to hang out here. Somewhere cool.

At Nido you can experience something different and cool. So – come for breakfast and have a strawberry, basil and brie sandwich. Or maybe come for lunch and have lobster stuffed mushroom caps and a Spanish white wine. You could also come for dinner and have lamb lollypops with a red wine from Rioja that makes your toes curl. Or maybe just maybe you want hot ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies with a shot of ice cold milk. The point is you just need to get here for one reason or another. Once you get here you will understand what its all about. We can wait to serve you!

Dream Dinners

Ok let’s talk about dinner for a minute. Have ever thought about the fact that you have to figure out what you are having for dinner 30 nights a month? I know it’s a struggle and I meal plan! But I have to say that I love what Dream Dinners does for Forsyth County. And I experienced preparing meals there and of course I have an article for you to read – “My Experience At Dream Dinners “

Dream Dinners

From Dream Dinners you will receive the following meals:

1.  Chateau Chicken with Almond Butter Sauce: A French inspired entree with smooth, buttery, toasted almond sauce drizzled over the top of golden chicken breasts.  Easy, elegant and light.

2.  Firehouse Three Cheese pasta with Meatballs: Kid favorite dinner presented in a pan for the easiest dinner prep ever!  Creamy ricotta cheese is blended with Italian seasonings, savory marinara sauce, penne pasta and juicy meatballs then topped with a mozzarella and Parmesan blend.

3.  Gaucho Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Garlic Asparagus Spears: Grilled to perfection, this seasoned pork tenderloin kicks up the flavor when topped with mild chili butter.  Paired with garlic asparagus spears for a beautiful, well rounded plate.

And as a bonus you will also get 3 ready to bake Gourmet Chocolate Chip cookies!

Please note: There will be no substitutions or changes in sampler package. And the dinners will be pre-prepped, but cooked at home. Also each dinner serves 3. For us it has always been enough for 2 adult and 2 small kiddos. Dinners MUST be scheduled for pickup between May 3-12, 2018.

How To Order

Aren’t you ready to be pampered and have 3 meals taken care of it? Send this link to your spouse or loved ones so they can order for you –! This package would normally be close to $200 but they are offering it for $155. And if you’ve never been to these businesses, this will be a great opportunity to experience them both. You won’t regret it!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms!

Mosquito Joe: Preparing for Spring & Summer

Mosquito Joe: Preparing for Spring & Summer

Let me set the stage and scene for you. You are in a fabulous mood. The sun is shining. The air is crisp. The sky is blue. It’s just a fantastically beautiful day. So you head out to your back yard for your kids to run off some energy. Then what happens? Well, in my house – the kids turn around requesting something. I’m thirty. I’m hungry. And the list goes on and on. Those requests I can manage. What I can’t manage is the amount of times my daughter, in particular, comes and says – “can we go inside? I keep getting bit by mosquitos.” And even though the day is glorious and I really want to stay outside, we reluctantly come inside and have to enjoy the outside just by open blinds.

I know this scenario doesn’t just happen to me! You’ve had a similar situation happen a time or two yourself. And I’m a big believer in oils. We have used those to repel. And they do work but they need to be reapplied often. Wouldn’t it be nice if the yard could be covered in repellant?

Introducing Mosquito Joe

I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to introduce Mosquito Joe and their excellent service to you. I’ve already signed up. Because we do deal with a good bit of mosquito issues especially in our backyard (due to a nearby creek).

I want to share with you three things I have learned about Mosquito Joe’s.

1 – Mosquito Joe’s motto is to make outside fun again.  I love that their heart is around family time outdoors. They truly want you to not have to worry with mosquito bites while you play outside this spring and summer.

2 – The way they work is by spraying barrier spray. These treatments are done every 3 weeks. Their trained technicians treat the yard using a backpack sprayer so the spray is accurately distributed. After about 30 minutes, your yard is ready to be played on.

3 – Their products are all-natural. They will not damage your yard or anything in your yard (like playgrounds, fences, etc.). In case you are interested, here is what they had to say when I asked about what makes their product all-natural?

All of the barrier spray chemicals we use are synthetic forms of pyrethrins called pyrethroids. Pyrethrins are insecticides that are derived from a naturally occurring compound called pyrethrum found in the chrysanthemum flower. Pyrethroids are used in numerous commercial products that consumers use to control insects such as household pets insecticides, pet shampoos and sprays, and even lice shampoos applied directly to the scalp. The standard barrier spray treatment is effective on other pests such as fleas, ticks and some flies as well.

As you are preparing for spring & summer (which is right around the corner), I recommend you to give them a call for a price quote to treat your yard. The peace of mind knowing your yard has been treated will allow you to have an even better time playing outside this spring and summer.

Special Offer

In even better news, I have a special offer to share with you! For your first spray, the cost would be $44.99 (up to 1/2 acre lot). All you have to do is register online and use the promo code –  cumminglocal.

Sweet Home Bakery: Uncovering The Truth About Artificial Dyes

Sweet Home Bakery: Uncovering The Truth About Artificial Dyes

We eat them all the time. Probably almost daily. Artificial dyes are in all kinds of our foods. In fact, when I started researching this – I discovered that we are consuming food dyes more than 500 percent in the past 50 years. WOW! I believe it all has to do with marketing. In fact, here’s what TruColor has to say about artificial dyes:
“Color is used to attract consumers, and the good news is that synthetic, petroleum-based dyes are not irreplaceable. There are a lot of natural dyes that can be used to brighten food. Blueberry juice concentrate, carrot juice, paprika, grape skin extract, beet juice, purple sweet potato, corn, and red cabbage are just a few alternative dyes. CSPI names a few stark differences in foods served in the United States and Europe in the report.  In Britain, Fanta orange soda is dyed with pumpkin and carrot extract while the U.S. version is dyed with Red 40 and Yellow 6. Kellogg Strawberry NutriGrain bars are colored with Red 40, Yellow 6 and Blue 1 in the U.S., but with beetroot, annatto and paprika extract in the UK. McDonald’s Strawberry Sundaes are colored with strawberries in Britain but with Red dye 40 in America. Consumer advocacy groups are calling on the FDA to enact similar policies in the United States. These groups argue that we deserve real strawberries too.”

Are artificial food colorings and dyes good for you?

If you are anything like me, you are probably wondering – are artificial food colorings and dyes good for you? I believe they aren’t good for you. Research has shown that “food dyes can cause everything from hyperactivity and allergic reactions to cancer.” Colors have been linked to brain tumors, bladder cancer, thyroid cancer & much more. The ones you will want to avoid are Yellow 5 and Red 40, as well as Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Orange B, Red 3 and Yellow 6.
With this many links, shouldn’t we all try to avoid? I think so!

How can we do our part?

This one is easy! We just need to make wise choices to avoid artificial dyes. That means checking lots of labels. Which I know is more time consuming. We stick to a paleo-ish diet and I believe that has helped this situation a lot.

Sweet Home Bakery

What about celebrations where you need a cake or any baked goods? Well, if you are looking for a baker who doesn’t use artificial dyes, you’ve found her.
Introducing Cynthia, of Sweet Home Bakery. To learn more about her bakery, you can check out this article I did about her – Sweet, Sinful & Safe Goodies From The Sweet Home Bakery.
She uses the TruColor, which is a plant and mineral based color. They are free of FD&C dyes, artificial flavor and preservatives and free of the Big 8 allergens (including milk, eggs, fish, shell fish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soy) and are GMO free.  They don’t perform the same as synthetic, petroleum based dyes.  The colors don’t come as bright and true, and it’s often necessary to design around particular colors and how they are applied.  As a side note – they aren’t cheap.  In some cases, trying to reproduce a colorful cake similar to a wild creation off the pages of Pinterest can mean a $25 – $50 dollar charge for just color. Cynthia, of Sweet Home Bakery, says:
“I buy TruColor by the GRAM and it is powdered, then it needs to be made into a gel and then added to the cake or frosting.  The colors can change drastically depending on the alkalinity or acidity of the food it is being added to.  For example, the blues and reds often turn purple, the greens turn brown, etc. All that to say that it can be tricky to work with.”

More About Cynthia, The Sweet Home Bakery:

As a diagnosed Celiac, with life threatening food allergies, I understand firsthand the frustration of never being able to just waltz into a bakery and buy something to sink your teeth into.  I also know too well what it’s like to have a fun evening with friends turn into a horrible night in the ER.

I was diagnosed prior to food labeling regulations.  Eating out was trial and lots of error. There were no physicians who could point me in the right direction to regaining my health, so I began studying alternative medicine and nutrition.  My eventual practice as a Professional Herbalist employing functional medicine, gave me years of clinical experience using the nutrition of real food to optimize health.  I authored The Get Real Cookbook, to help my clients find a solid foothold and thrive.  Clean eating is a wonderful thing, but life needs a little indulgence now and again!  The Sweet Home Bakery is here to help with that.
