SUMMARY:Ancient Egypt - Great Civilizations
DESCRIPTION:The ancient Egyptians are most famous for their elaborate funerary preparations\, but these practices were only a small part of a broader Egyptian worldview in which the practices not only made sense\, but were regarded as absolutely necessary. This talk explores the ways in which the ancient Egyptian experience of the world was shaped by elements such as landscape\, agriculture\, and technology\, and seeks to understand the place of funerary religion within this larger whole. \nAbout Dr. Rune Nyord \nDr. Rune Nyord is an Assistant Professor of Ancient Egyptian Art and Archaeology at Emory University. Before joining Emory in 2018\, he held positions at the University of Copenhagen\, Christ’s College (University of Cambridge)\, and the Free University Berlin. His research focuses on ancient Egyptian funerary culture and ancestor cult\, especially of the Middle Kingdom (early 2nd millennium BCE). He is the author of the monograph Breathing Flesh: Conceptions of the Body in the Ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts (Copenhagen\, 2009) as well as numerous papers and book chapters on ancient Egyptian religion\, art\, and language.

SUMMARY:Indian Classical-Carnatic Concert - Featuring vocalist Anjana Nagaraja
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon of Indian Classical-Carnatic music performed by vocalist Anjana Nagaraja with live violin and mridangam accompaniment. \nIndian classical music can be broadly divided into Hindustani and Carnatic music. While the Hindustani system is associated with north India\, Carnatic or Karnataka classical music is popular in southern parts. \nCarnatic music is one of the oldest systems of music. Sri Purandara Dasaru is considered as the Father of Carnatic Music. He formulated the system for teaching. Other great composers like Saint Tyagaraja\, Sri Muttuswy Dixitar\, Sri Shyama Shastry (trinity of Carnatic music) and many more have contributed towards this system with their structured compositions in different Ragas (melodic scales) which are handed down through generations of disciples. The main elements of these compositions are devotion and philosophy\, but there is a lot of scope for improvisation that differs from musician to musician.  \nAtlanta-based Anjana Nagaraja is originally from Mysore\, Karnataka in India. She is a disciple of Smt. Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar\, a leading vocal artist in Karnataka and Vidwan Ganesh Rajagopalan\, Carnatic violin maestro. She also has trained in light music under Smt. G. Pushpalatha. She has completed Vidhwat exams (Proficiency in Music) during 2011 and 2012 and has pursued a Master of Arts in South Indian classical Music from Karnataka State Open University\, Mysore\, and is a graded artist in All India Radio (Akashavani) since 2012. \nAnjana Nagaraja has performed in several prestigious organizations\, such as Sri Thyagaraja Sangeetha Sabha\, Ganabharathi\, Sri Nadbrahma Sangeetha Sabha\, Ramasevamandali Charitable Trust\, Sri Chandramouleshwara Temple Trust (all in Mysore)\, Gayana Samaja\, Narasimhachar Music Foundation (in Bangalore)\, The Kingsort Office of Cultural Arts (TN)\, Khayaal\, Georgia Tech University (GA)\, Mirani Foundation\, Knoxville (TN)\, Namadhwar\, Cumming (GA)\, Yugal Kunj\, Duluth (GA)\, and Indian Music Ensemble\, Auburn University (AL). Anjana also holds a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from the University of Mysore\, Karnataka\, India.

SUMMARY:Lost and Drowned in North Georgia -  Forgotten Cities and Towns
DESCRIPTION:North Georgia has more than forty lakes and not one is natural. The state’s controversial decision to dam the region’s rivers for power and water supply changed the landscape forever. Lost communities\, forgotten crossroads\, dissolving racetracks and even entire towns disappeared\, with remnants occasionally peeking up from the depths during times of extreme drought. The creation of Lake Lanier displaced more than seven hundred families. During the construction of Lake Chatuge\, busloads of schoolboys were brought in to help disinter graves for the community’s cemetery relocation. Contractors clearing land for the development of Lake Hartwell met with seventy-eight-year-old Eliza Brock wielding a shotgun and warning the men off her property. Lisa Russell\, author of Lost Cities of North Georgia\,  Underwater Ghost Towns of North Georgia\, and the upcoming Lost Mill Towns of North Georgia\, dives into the history hidden beneath North Georgia’s lakes. \nLisa M. Russell is a member of Society for Georgia Archaeology\, Bartow History Museum\, Etowah Valley Historical Society\, Whitfield-Murray Historical Society\, and the Cherokee County Historical Society. She earned her Masters of Arts degree in professional writing from Kennesaw State University. Lisa teaches English full-time at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. She is a part-time professor of communication at Kennesaw State University. She also teaches at Belhaven University. In her “spare-time” You can find Lisa exploring North Georgia for her next story.
