SUMMARY:Mark Warren Presents "What Made Wyatt Earp Tick?"
DESCRIPTION:What Made Wyatt Earp Tick? Many historians have attempted to dissect the personality of Wyatt Earp\, calling him a complex man with contradictory callings. He was\, in fact\, a very simple man with a straight-forward demeanor. His physical prowess put him in a commanding position among other men\, but his confidence and deliberation were the palpable forces that made others fear or admire him. \nAfter 63 years of research\, author and Western historian Mark Warren reveals the true nature of Wyatt Earp and explains why he has deservedly entered the pantheon of American heroes. Come join us for a slide presentation of all things Earp. \nWestern historian Mark Warren has been researching the Frontier West for most of his life. His trilogy\, Wyatt Earp\, An American Odyssey\,” has met with the approval of a discerning group of Western historians as well as lovers of the historical fiction genre. \nUnlike most books on Wyatt Earp\, Warren includes the women in Wyatt’s life rounding out the amazing\, yet tragic story of this iconic Western marshal. These books appeal to both men and women alike\, and they make a great selection for book clubs who enjoy discussing the history of our nation\, and those who pioneered the American West. \nRead chapter one of Adobe Moon and find out more about all of Mark’s books at www.wyattearpanamericanodyssey.com

SUMMARY:It's Not Just Rocket Science: The Why and How of Space Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Local NASA Solar System Ambassador\, Curt Godwin\, will discuss NASA’s past and future human space exploration efforts\, including the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing and the Space Launch System scheduled to land on the moon by 2024\, and the commercial partnerships required for missions’ success. \nThe Commercial Crew Program is a partnership between NASA and commercial partners to launch astronauts to the International Space Station from the US. We’ve been relying on Russia for crewed launches since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011. Both Boeing and SpaceX are contracted to carry out these missions\, with the first crewed launch scheduled for July of this year. \nThe Space Launch System\, or SLS\, is NASA’s super-heavy lift rocket that is in development. It is tentatively scheduled for launch in 2020 and will be capable of delivering crew and cargo to the Moon and\, eventually\, to Mars. NASA is aiming to land astronauts on the Moon before the end of 2024. \nCurt has been a fan of space exploration for as long as he can remember\, keeping his eyes to the skies from an early age. Initially majoring in Nuclear Engineering\, Curt later decided that computers might be a more interesting – and safer – career field. He’s worked in education technology for more than 25 years\, has been published in industry and peer journals\, and is a respected authority on wireless network engineering. Throughout his adult life\, he maintained his love for all things space and has written about his experiences at a variety of NASA events\, both on his personal blog and as a freelance media representative. He now represents NASA as a Solar System Ambassador.

SUMMARY:Space Race and Beyond: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11
DESCRIPTION:In 1969\, half a century ago\, mankind watched as humans stepped foot onto a celestial body other than the Earth for the first time. The tumultuous Space Race of the preceding decade challenged imaginations\, rapidly advanced technologies\, and captivated the world’s attention. In the decades that followed the Apollo missions we have seen rovers sent to Mars and satellites sent to Jupiter\, Saturn\, their many moons\, and far beyond. John Indergaard from University of North Georgia will give a brief historical context leading up to the Apollo 11 mission\, discuss the technological advances that made it possible\, describe some of the most fascinating findings of other unmanned exploratory missions\, as well as consider the possibilities of human space travel to Mars and beyond. \nJohn Indergaard is an alumnus of the Georgia Tech School of Physics\, receiving his Master’s Degree in 2015 while researching the electromagnetic properties of nanometer-scale metallic atom clusters. He is now the Lab Coordinator in the Physics Department at UNG Dahlonega\, implementing curriculum changes to improve the teaching of experimental methods to introductory physics students. John’s interest in science outreach has led him to leading public events at the Atlanta and Dahlonega Science Festivals.

SUMMARY:Cherokee Medicine with author Mark Warren
DESCRIPTION:The diverse flora of the Southeast once provided everything that was needed by the original inhabitants. This is why native people held in high esteem every plant of forest and field. \nOur modern day ignoring of these gifts is what separates us from a life of truly interacting with nature on an intimate level. And that loss has\, no doubt\, contributed to our sometimes careless handling of the land. \nThe good news is that this trend can be reversed\, one person at a time. Mark Warren\, author of Secrets of the Forest\, shares some of the plants that were used by the Cherokee for their common ailments\, ranging from minor cuts\, stings\, head lice\, and rashes to gall stones\, dysentery\, nausea\, and skin cancer. Techniques for field preparations will be included.
