SUMMARY:Lost and Drowned in North Georgia - Forgotten Cities and Towns
DESCRIPTION:North Georgia has more than forty lakes and not one is natural. The state’s controversial decision to dam the region’s rivers for power and water supply changed the landscape forever. Lost communities\, forgotten crossroads\, dissolving racetracks and even entire towns disappeared\, with remnants occasionally peeking up from the depths during times of extreme drought. The creation of Lake Lanier displaced more than seven hundred families. During the construction of Lake Chatuge\, busloads of schoolboys were brought in to help disinter graves for the community’s cemetery relocation. Contractors clearing land for the development of Lake Hartwell met with seventy-eight-year-old Eliza Brock wielding a shotgun and warning the men off her property. Lisa Russell\, author of Lost Cities of North Georgia\, Underwater Ghost Towns of North Georgia\, and the upcoming Lost Mill Towns of North Georgia\, dives into the history hidden beneath North Georgia’s lakes. \nLisa M. Russell is a member of Society for Georgia Archaeology\, Bartow History Museum\, Etowah Valley Historical Society\, Whitfield-Murray Historical Society\, and the Cherokee County Historical Society. She earned her Masters of Arts degree in professional writing from Kennesaw State University. Lisa teaches English full-time at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. She is a part-time professor of communication at Kennesaw State University. She also teaches at Belhaven University. In her “spare-time” You can find Lisa exploring North Georgia for her next story.

SUMMARY:The Mongol Empire and the Chinggis Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Stretching from the Sea of Japan to the Mediterranean\, the Mongol Empire was the largest contiguous empire in world history with a territory covering approximately 14 million square miles (roughly the size of Africa). While contemporaries viewed the Mongols on par with natural disasters\, the apocalypse\, and even the anti-christ\, the level of death and destruction caused in the conquest obscures an influence and legacy that continues to shape the world today. \nBio: Timothy May is Associate Dean of Arts & Letters and Professor of Central Eurasian History at the University of North Georgia. He earned his PhD in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is the author and editor of 9 books on the Mongol Empire and Mongolia including The Mongols (2019)\, The Mongol Empire (2018)\, and The Mongol Art of War (2007\, 2016). His books have been translated into Polish\, Korean\, and Chinese.

SUMMARY:Slavery in Ancient Rome
DESCRIPTION:The rise of Rome as an ancient super-power led to the capture and enslavement of hundreds of thousands of people from the areas it conquered\, especially Greece\, the Middle East\, and modern-day France and Britain. Roman slavery differed from much later U.S. slavery because it was not based on race but was the expected fate of all those defeated in war (including Romans when they fell into enemy hands). Emory professor\, Dr. Judith Evans Grubbs\, will talk about what we know of the lives of these slaves\, including their family relationships and opportunities for freedom. \nAbout Dr. Judith Evans Grubbs \nJudith Evans Grubbs\, Ph.D.\, is a Betty Gage Holland Professor of Roman History at Emory University\, where she has been teaching since 2010. She is a native of Atlanta (and an Emory alumna)\, but before returning to Emory\, she taught at Sweet Briar College in Virginia and Washington University in St. Louis. Her teaching and research interests include Roman law and the family in ancient Rome\, slavery in the Roman world\, and the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire.

SUMMARY:Trends in College Admission - Presented by Applerouth Tutoring Services
DESCRIPTION:The only constant in the world of college admissions is change. \nApplication numbers are up\, yield rates are down\, and colleges are turning to enrollment management to meet their institutional objectives. The admissions process is moving earlier and earlier\, and some colleges are filling over 50% of their classes before January regular decision deadlines. International students are on the rise\, and domestic students are competing for those scarce\, moderately priced seats at State Flagship institutions. Tuition is up and merit aid is more important than ever. Given high levels of grade inflation\, academic rigor is more important than ever. Testing matters\, but SAT Subject Tests are down and the test-optional/flexible movement continues to grow. Let’s discuss the major trends affecting your students in the college admissions process. \nThis program is for high school students and their parents. No registration required.

SUMMARY:Nella Larsen's "Passing": A Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Our third program in an ongoing series on race in American culture will be a discussion of Nella Larsen’s “Passing.” This short novella explores an important but often-forgotten racial practice during the Jim Crow era: African-Americans “passing” as white in order to gain access to restricted spaces\, groups\, and social privileges. But as we’ll discuss\, the novel does so much more: focused on the relationship between two women\, Clare and Irene\, Larsen’s story examines the competing pressures of friendship\, racial loyalty\, and betrayal. This psychological thriller builds towards a set of complicated questions about what it means to have an identity and what one would risk to keep it. Copies of the book are available through Forsyth County Public Library. \nAbout Dr. Ian Afflerbach \nDr. Ian Afflerbach is an Assistant Professor of American Literature at the University of North Georgia\, where he teaches and researches in 20th century American literature\, political history\, African-American studies\, and the history of ideas. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California\, Davis\, and has lived in Montreal\, Vermont\, North Carolina\, and Germany. His writing has appeared in journals like English Literary History\, Modern Fiction Studies\, and Studies in the Novel. He has been named a 2019 Fellow by the Obama Institute for Transnational American Studies in Mainz\, Germany.

DESCRIPTION:Whether teens are applying for jobs or interviewing for college scholarships\, being able to speak in public is a necessary – but often scary! – skill to master. Being a confident public speaker can set you apart. \nThe internationally renowned Toastmasters organization is offering a six-week workshop this fall for a select group of middle and high school students looking to take their presentation and public speaking skills to the next level. \nSponsored by the local Toastmasters Club\, teen participants will practice speaking and listening skills in a positive environment and receive coaching from experienced speakers. By the end of the six-week workshop\, teens will be able to speak to groups or individuals with confidence and poise. \nIn this program\, each teen will: \nLearn to overcome nervousness when speaking before a group\nLearn the basics of preparing and delivering an organized speech\nLearn the basics of leadership by serving as the leader of the meeting\nIncrease confidence by practicing impromptu speaking skills\nLearn listening skills by participating as an “ah counter” or “grammarian” or “timer”\nDeliver a positive evaluation of a speaker\nEach student will need to: \nGive at least 2 speeches (an Ice Breaker and one focused on speech organization) during the six-week session. (3 to 4 minutes for each speech)\nParticipate in the impromptu speaking sessions. (1 to 2 minutes)\nEvaluate 1 speech. (2 to 3 minutes) Coaches will evaluate speeches in the beginning\, but the students will be given guidelines so that they will be able to provide positive feedback to peers.\nThe workshop will meet each Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for six weeks\, August 17 to September 21\, 2019. If you register for this workshop\, please be aware that this is a commitment for all six weeks in the series. \nRegistration opens Saturday\, July 27 at 10:00 a.m.
