SUMMARY:Forsyth Reads Together: Sherman's Atlanta Campaign
DESCRIPTION:On May 6\, 1864\, William Tecumseh’s Army pulled out of Ringgold\, Georgia\, and headed for its major objective – Atlanta\, Georgia. Sherman’s army numbered over 100\,000\, while Confederate General Joseph Johnston never had more than 74\,000. \nAfter a series of significant battles in north Georgia\, Sherman’s troops began crossing the Chattahoochee River just north of Atlanta on July 8\, 1864. Seeing that there was little chance that he could break through the defenses of Atlanta\, Sherman chose instead to destroy the four railroads which supplied the city. By September 2\, 1864\,  Sherman was in control of Atlanta\, and the Confederate forces had retreated to the north and west. \nRobert C. Jones will discuss the overall Atlanta Campaign and talk about sites along the way that proved to be of importance. \nRobert C. Jones served as President of the Kennesaw Historical Society for 21 years (1994-2015)\, and also served as a member of the executive board of the Kennesaw Museum Foundation for 17 years (1998-2015). The Museum Foundation helped fund the 45\,000 square foot Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw\, GA.  \nRobert has written more than 50 books on historical topics\, including “Retracing the Route of Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign”\, “A Guide to the Civil War in Georgia”\, and “Heroes and Heroines of the American Revolution”. In 2018\, Robert was awarded the Women in American History medal from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in writing or illustrating children’s picture books? How do you go from an idea to creation to publication?   \nAuthor Chris Jespersen and illustrator Josie Toney will discuss their journey creating Georgia ABCs: A Finding Milo Book.  Published by University of North Georgia Press\, the book takes readers on a delightful trek across the state accompanied by curious canine Milo.  You might even meet Milo in person! \nAuthor Chris Jespersen is a long-time admirer and reader of children’s books\, a passion that sparked when his two sons were learning to read.  He is also a professor of American diplomatic history in the Department of History\, Anthropology\, and Philosophy at the University of North Georgia where he also serves as dean of the College of Arts & Letters. \nIllustrator Josie Toney is a self-taught artist with a surrealistic and whimsical style.  She creates in a variety of mediums including acrylic\, pastels\, watercolor\, marker\, color pencil\, and graphite.  She resides in Cleveland\, Georgia\, where she draws and paints alongside her family\, four dogs\, one cat\, and several chickens. \nThis Forsyth Writes Together event is sponsored by FCPL Friends & Advocates.

DESCRIPTION:There are a dozen basic Bass lures that come in hard and soft plastic styles that anglers should learn to use. This class will cover the most common lures used to catch Largemouth Bass\, Spotted Bass and Shoal Bass year-round. Veteran angler Ken Sturdivant will show and demonstrate these lures to anglers\, and he will also have a free Tackle Box List to get anglers started. Ken Sturdivant of Southern Fishing is an expert on fishing in Georgia lakes.
