We’re getting lots of questions about finding local volunteer opportunities in Forsyth County and throughout Cumming.  With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s a great reminder to help our community (now & throughout the year).  We started updating our list and then turned to Facebook for some help too.   Below, we’ve linked to volunteer pages of some recommended organizations.  This is just meant to serve as a starting point – definitely click on the links &/or call the organizations that you might have a passion for and see how you can get involved!

Here are some organizations to check out:

          • Abba House: They have both permanent/long-term volunteer opportunities, as well as opportunities to volunteer for one day or one project.
          • Cumming Ministries & Thrift Store: They have many areas of ministry in need of volunteers from local churches and from the community. The  current needs include the following: financial donations, drop off donations for thrift store, donate time to work in the thrift store, skilled craftsmen to help with renovations, mentors for the residents, drivers to take men to work or doctor appointments, prayer for the ministry.
          • Family Haven: They need the help of community members like you to accomplish their mission.  Please view the list of volunteer opportunities here to find out how you can become involved today!
          • Food for Thought Project: They are looking for volunteers to make pick ups or work in the kids clubhouse. More details here.
          • Humane Society of Forsyth County: If you are passionate about helping our furry friends, we need you at the Humane Society of Forsyth County.
          • The Place of Forsyth County: Volunteers at The Place of Forsyth work together with staff to support our families and our Mission: The Place helps people in Forsyth County with emergency basic needs. We ask that all volunteers provide a minimum of three (3) hours of their time. Current volunteer needs include: Food Pantry (MarketPlace), Thrift Store, Work Force Instructors & Mentors, Administrators, Garden
          • Whispering Hope: Join Whispering Hope in our efforts to protect life and reach those vulnerable to abortion with hope and help.  Volunteer to play a role in life initiatives to help us serve those who come to us seeking an alternative to abortion. There are many opportunities to help Whispering Hope, click here to review the options.
          • United Way of Forsyth County:  Volunteers are at the heart of our organization.  Plus, it’s a great way to get involved in your community and see immediate results for your efforts. Here’s a few places they could use help: Office Volunteer, Photographer, Stuff the Bus Committee, Gobble Wobble 5K/15K, Marketing and Communication Volunteer
          • March of Dimes: They are currently looking for financial support. More information can be found here.
          • Georgia Mountain Food Bank: Volunteers play a critical role in the success of Georgia Mountain Food Bank. Volunteers help in many ways: volunteer action center, food drives, outreach and administrative.(Please note: Kids are able to volunteer here as well)
          • Bearfoot Ranch: There are many opportunities for volunteers at Bearfoot Ranch: grooming and feeding horses, cleaning stalls, building and fence repair, and helping with therapy lessons are just a few of the areas in need of volunteers.
          • Furkids Animal Hospital: Furkids is run mostly by volunteers, over 1000 strong! We welcome new supporters who are interested in helping our homeless animals. Volunteers are our lifeline and we have many volunteer options, including volunteer opportunities for children. Check out the opportunities they have here.
          • Meals By Grace: They have many ways you can serve. My family likes to sign up as a food support volunteer. They serve Forsyth County families every Sunday at Midway United Methodist Church from 1 to about 4pm. (On the 1st Sunday of every month, its Kid’s in the Kitchen day. Children under 12 can sign up to cook in the kitchen. )
          • Just One Africa: Everyone has a role to play, and there are many ways to make a difference. How will you help to transform their worlds? Join us on a journey that will create the foundation for a brighter future for children in Kenya and bring clean, safe water to those in need. Give the Gift of Meals to Local Seniors This Holiday Season

Senior Services offers Home-Delivered Meals Gift Certificate Program

Help brighten the holiday season for Forsyth County home-bound senior citizens by participating in the 2014 Home-Delivered Meals Holiday Gift Certificate Program. Meals purchased with a holiday gift certificate through Forsyth County Senior Services will be delivered through the Meals on Wheels program.

Forsyth County Senior Services Director Judy Theilman said there is a continuous need for home-delivered meals for senior citizens.

“Recent years have shown an increasing demand for our Meals on Wheels program,” Theilman said. “Anyone supporting the Home-Delivered Meals Holiday Gift Certificate Program will certainly make a positive impact for our local seniors.”

Those interested in participating may choose to provide meals for a day, week, month or year. The cost is $3.61 for one meal, $18.05 for one week, $79.42 for one month, and $938.60 for the entire year. Gifts may be tax-deductible.

Checks should be made payable to Forsyth County Senior Services, Holiday Gift Certificate Program and may be mailed or delivered to the following address:

All meals delivered from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day will include a special certificate to wish happy holidays from the meal provider.

Senior Services has set a goal of delivering 4,000 meals to local senior citizens this holiday season.

  • Forsyth County Senior Services: Forsyth County would love to provide meals to seniors all over the county. For more information about the program with Meals on Wheels, click here.
  • Aerial’s Toy Collection: The Forsyth County is collecting new, unwrapped toys for any age and new, tagged clothing for children ages 6 to 14 can be dropped off now at Forsyth County fire stations, the Fire Department Headquarters (3520 Settingdown Road), under the Christmas tree in the lobby of the County Administration Building (110 E. Main Street) or at any of the county’s four library branches.
  • Act Together Ministries: This non-profit has tons of opportunities for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. You can visit their website for the most up to date information. The offer options like cooking a Thanksgiving dinner, donating a Turkey, making table decor, sponsoring a child for Christmas, organizing a food drive, and much much more!   • Forsyth County Senior Services – Senior Services Seeks Holiday Gift Angels for Community’s Senior Citizens

Annual Program helps bring holiday cheer to local seniors

Be a holiday angel to a local senior citizen in need by participating in the 2013 Holiday Gift Angels Program. The program is presented by Forsyth County Senior Services.

“The Holiday Gift Angels Program helps spread holiday cheer and is a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of our seniors,” said Senior Services Director Michael Bohn. “During the holiday season, the gifts help remind our senior citizens that someone is thinking about them.”

The gift request tags from senior citizens are now available at the following Forsyth County Senior Services locations:

Center at Charles Place, 595 Dahlonega Street
open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hearthstone Lodge Community Center, 7305 Lanier Drive
open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sexton Hall Enrichment Center, 2115 Chloe Road
open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Each gift request tag contains the name of a local senior citizen along with a gift idea for him/her. Those participating in the program may deliver the unwrapped gift in a gift bag   with the gift request tag attached (or another tag with the senior’s name and route number) to any of the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations weekdays until December 6.

  • Fire Department – Forsyth County Fire Department Begins Annual Toy Collection

Eleventh annual toy collection helps children in need

The Forsyth County Fire Department is seeking the assistance of citizens in helping to make this holiday season special for children in need, through the department’s eleventh annual Aerial’s House toy collection.

“The very generous support of the community has allowed the Aerial’s House toy collection to help brighten the holiday season for many local children over the years,” Fire Chief Danny Bowman said. “Collecting the gifts is truly something the Fire Department personnel look forward to every year. It is our honor to serve this community and we are humbled to be able to give back to the community in this small way.”

New, unwrapped toys for any age and new, tagged clothing for children ages 6 to 14 may be dropped off now at Forsyth County fire stations, the Fire Department Headquarters located at 3520 Settingdown Road, or any of the county’s four library branches.

Beginning in December, toys and clothing for Aerial’s House may also be dropped off under the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Forsyth County Administration Building, located at 110 East Main Street in Cumming.
