Sunscreen Education

If you ask me, sunscreen is always an important topic, but especially during the summer months when the rays are more intense.  Most people simply look for a high SPF sunscreen, thinking that the higher the SPF the better protection they are getting.

Actually, nothing can be further from the truth!

It is very important to read your labels and look for a sunscreen containing the active ingredients:  Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide.   These are natural minerals from the earth that provide the skin with physical “broad spectrum” protection.  Meaning, when the suns rays hit you, they reflect off … rather than absorb into your skin.  Most sunscreens over the counter (and sadly some that are prescribed) contain chemical sunscreens which numb the top layers of skin so you can’t feel the burn you’re getting!

SPF 15 and SPF 30 is only about 2%-3% different in coverage!  It’s physically impossible to get higher than a SPF 45!

Sun damage is the #1 leading cause of pre-mature aging and skin cancer.

Be sun smart this summer and look for a sunscreen containing Zinc or Titanium and do your skin a favor!

Winter Skincare – Tips from an Aesthetician

In the Winter, our skin can become especially dry and flaky due to the harsh winds and chilly air, not to mention the inside heaters that help pull the moisture right our of our skin!  It is very important to continue in good skin habits during the winter to make sure your skin is hydrated and protected.

First things first ~ always wash your face morning and night! Just like a fresh painting, you need to start with a fresh, clean palette before putting on moisturizer, make-up or sunscreen. A good cleanser will remove dirt, oil, debris and other environmental pollutants, as well as refresh the skin without stripping precious oils.

Dry skin needs a little exfoliation! Most people think if they are dry they simply need to slather up with a moisturizer, and maybe a thicker one than usual!  Actually, by exfoliating at least once a week, you will remove the dead, dry skin cells. A freshly exfoliated face will give your skin a better chance of soaking up the moisturizer.

Moisture, please! When choosing a moisturizer, look for natural ingredients and avoid harmful chemicals and preservatives that strip the skin of valuable moisture. Dry skin types may benefit from a moisturizer with added oils (like jojoba, squalelne, grapeseed) to give the skin an extra emollient boost!

Use SunScreen … even on cloudy days! When choosing a sunscreen, a Zinc Oxide (or Titanium Dioxide) blend can greatly reduce the amount of solar stress (sun damage) to your skin and help protect you from free radical damage. Sunscreen is important year-round. This is your “insurance” for healthy skin for years to come!
