Celebrating Valentine’s Day with your Children

Back from the Archives:  The following is a guest post (originally posted February 2012) by Rachael – local Mom, Cumming Resident, and blog author of Confessions of a Mom on a Tight Rope.  She’s sharing some fun & simple ideas to teach our kids about love … perfect for February or any time of the year!

Ideas for Valentine’s Day with Kids

I like to find some sort of intentionality around holidays. It might just my personality but it’s what I do. So I thought it might be helpful to have some lists of ideas you could do with your children.

To me, Valentine’s Day isn’t so much a holiday. I think you should show love everyday. But since, it is “considered” a holiday – why not celebrate!

Here are some ideas that I thought of to teach your kids about love.

  1. Make heart themed cupcakes for the teacher with a note that thanks them for “loving on me all year long”.
  2. Pick a verse on love and work with your child to memorize it for the month of February. A few of my favorites on the subject of love are: “Love One Another” John 15:17, “Love is patient, love is kind…” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, and “Love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ Luke 10:27
  3. Make homemade valentines for family members or friends.
  4. Do something for another family. It could be a meal, dessert, etc. Make this a family tradition.
  5. Trade chores out. Do this “just because you love each other.” For me, that would be cook dinner and clean -up (usually my husband and I do one or the other). For the kids, it could mean one child choosing to do his/her siblings chores one day.
  6. Pay it forward. Let your kids decide on this one. Their ambition and ideas will surprise you!

So those are my ideas. Anyone have more to share? Comment away!

Going Green on the Cheap

The following is a guest post by Cumming Local Mom Writer, Jenie.

Going Green on the Cheap:  Moisturizing Your Body

Most lotions contain chemicals that are not good for your body. Your skin “drinks” whatever you put on it. Have you read the ingredients on your lotion? Pretty weird stuff.

Here are a few ingredients you can check to see if it’s in your lotion*:

  • Parabens (a preservative) - Studies implicate their connection with cancer because their hormone-disrupting qualities mimic estrogen and could disrupt your body’s endocrine system.
  • Mineral Oil, Paraffin, and Petrolatum – These petroleum products coat the skin like plastic – clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins. They can slow cellular development, creating earlier signs of aging. They’re implicated as a suspected cause of cancer. Plus, they can disrupt hormonal activity. When you think about black oil pumped from deep underground, ask yourself why you’d want to put that kind of stuff on your skin.
  • Sodium laurel or lauryl sulfate (SLS), also known as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) - Found in over 90% of personal care products! They break down your skin’s moisture barrier, potentially leading to dry skin with premature aging. And because they easily penetrate your skin, they can allow other chemicals easy access.
  • Dioxane (Hidden in ingredients such as PEG, polysorbates, laureth, ethoxylated alcohols) – Very common in personal care products. These chemicals are often contaminated with high concentrations of highly volatile 1,4-dioxane that’s easily absorbed through the skin. Its carcinogenicity was first reported in 1965, and later confirmed in studies including one from the National Cancer Institute in 1978.

So, here’s a hand made solution you can use instead of chemicals.

-Body lotion & hand lotion-
Use: Olive oil, coconut oil, or grapeseed oil.
Any of these work well. Just pour on some drops and rub in. Or with coconut oil, grab a small scoop of it and rub in.

-Cuticle oil-
I use olive oil. It keeps brittle nails from getting dried out from the cold.  You won’t get as many hangnails or cracked cuticles. Applying occasionally won’t work though, you have to use it often.

-Body Scrub-
I love body scrub! It’s great for people like me that are lazy about putting lotion on. It’s just too cold after you get out of the shower some days to do it! (You can also use on your hands, it makes them so soft!)
•easy scrub recipe•
1. Fill a jar 1/2 way with salt or sugar (white or brown works).
2. Mix in olive oil until you get a slushy consistency.
You’re done!

To use: after you rinse your soap off, rub your scrub (in a circular motion) on the dry areas of your body. Rinse off the salt/sugar. Just be careful because it can make your tub slippery.
You can get very creative with your scrub by adding essential oils, dried herbs or flowers, or trying different types of scrubs (like coffee). There are many recipes on the web you can find! Just don’t add synthetic stuff.

Organic products are best, but if it’s too expensive to you, it’s ok. It’s still MUCH better than a regular bottle of lotion.

Handmade Holiday (or any Day) for Dad

The following is a guest post by Cumming Local Mom Contributor, Rachael.  With Christmas being just TWO months away (sorry for the reminder!!), this is perfect timing for gathering supplies and putting this on the To-Do List.

Gifts for Dad or Grandpa

Whenever a birthday or Christmas comes around, I usually have no problem coming up with a gift. Unless it’s my dad, grandpa, or husband. Men! Why are they so hard to shop for? Well, about a year ago – I decided to make gifts for them instead. I was done with buying giftcards, books, or ties!

My favorite craft so far has been a stepping-stone. They are so easy to make. And it’s awesome to add on to their collection each year. You can by a kit to make them at Michael’s. Or you can make them my way. Either way – it makes a great sentimental gift!

Supplies:

  1. Water
  2. Cement/Water (follow directions – I like Quikcrete mortar mix the best)
  3. Rubber pan (any shape – circle, square, etc) or an aluminum pie pan
  4. Pieces of stained glass (you can get these for free a lot of times at glass businesses or cheaply at any craft store)
  5. Marbles or other décor
  6. Lettering stamps

Step 1:

Mix the cement with water

Step 2:

Let it dry for about 30 minutes

Step 3:

Decorate however with the stained glass. Make sure to press them down so they are level with the cement.  You can also use the lettering stamps to write something on the stone.

Step 4:

Let the creation dry overnight. The next day you can take a wet cloth and wipe off the stones so they are clean.

Step 5:

You can go ahead and take the stepping stone out and now you have a perfect homemade gift!

A Cumming Local Mom’s Pick

The following is a guest post by Jenie, a Cumming Local Mom Contributor.  Jenie and her family just moved to Cumming in May of this year.

Fagan’s Biscuit Barn – My new favorite restaurant

When we first moved here, one of the first places that caught our eye was the Biscuit Barn.  We thought the name was pretty funny, plus you can never go wrong eating biscuits. I’m so glad we tried it out!

If you’ve never been, the restaurant looks like a big red barn (and they have a drive-thru, yay!).  Inside, you wait in line to give your order, then sit at your table, and wait for your number to be called. The people that work there are very efficient and super friendly. You never have to wait very long for your food.

The first thing I ordered was a biscuit bowl. It is a biscuit topped with eggs, sausage (or bacon), gravy (or grits), topped with cheese. It was so good, I HAD to have a biscuit bowl every couple of weeks! (Who am I kidding, more like once a week.)

The lady that works there said I needed to work my way through the menu, because everything there is delicious.  So, I decided to try something new and I’m glad I did!  I have now had the best chicken fried steak ever, and the best chicken and dumplings ever!

Another thing I like about the Biscuit Barn is that they make a lot of their food from scratch. They also grow and sell some of their own produce.

This restaurant is very family friendly and the prices are great.

Hours are:
Monday-Friday 5:30am-2pm
Saturday 6am-2pm

Check out the full menu on their website:

Going Green on the Cheap

The following is a guest post by Cumming Local Mom Writer, Jenie.

Going Green on the Cheap … Shampoo & Conditioner

I decided a couple of years ago to use less chemicals on my body. I had two reasons:

1. For the environment
2. To hopefully clear up my acne.

When I began my search I was shocked to see how costly “green” body products were. There also seemed to be way too many ingredients to me, for these things to be truly green/organic.  I knew there had to be a way to do it cheaper and with less ingredients.  So here’s the things I use that are truly green/organic & frugal:

SHAMPOO (2 options)

1. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap (liquid)
I use this for shampoo most of the time. I LOVE this product! It’s super concentrated so it goes a long way. You can buy it in a liquid or a bar. (I have both.) It comes in several different fragrances & also fragrance free. You can also use the Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap for body wash, hand soap, and alot of other uses too. The big bottle costs around $15, and it takes me months to use it all up.

DIRECTIONS:
-Wet hair, put several drops across the front section of hair, rub in.
-Section at crown, put several drops on bottom section of hair, rub in.
-Massage your whole scalp
-Rinse thoroughly

2.  Baking soda
Super cheap & I can skip a day of washing when I use this.

DIRECTIONS:
-Use your old shampoo bottle (rinsed out) and fill it half way with baking soda, & fill the rest with water.
-Shake to mix.
- Wet hair.  Section hair & squeeze some baking soda mixture on section & gently rub in. Do this to your whole head, making sure to give your mixture a shake to keep it mixed. (Your baking soda doesn’t dissolve in the water.) I do 4 sections in the front & 2 in back.
-Massage your whole scalp to make sure you got it all over. (This is great for stimulating your hair to grow too!)
-Leave it on for a minute or two.
-THOROUGHLY rinse.

CONDITIONER

• Apple Cider Vinegar
If you use this, you will not smell like vinegar!

DIRECTIONS:
-Take a 10oz cup (it doesn’t have to be 10oz, that’s just what I use) & put approximately 2 tsp vinegar in the cup & fill the rest with water.
-Dip the ends of your hair in (if it’s long) & then pour the rest over your head.
-Wait a few seconds & RINSE.

I have fine hair and it works great for me because it doesn’t weigh my hair down. For people with thicker & drier hair, you will have to add more vinegar.

A warning: your hair/scalp will have to adjust to this. Make the switch slowly, unless you don’t mind looking like a grease head. Start out once a week, then twice a week, & so on. Your hair and scalp will feel so good & healthy, with a natural shine.

Stopping to Think

Do you ever find yourself thinking “when I finally finish school…”, “when I get the job I want…”, “when I get married…”, “when I have children..”, “when the children move out…”, “when I retire..”

It’s easy to get caught up in planning the future, but we have to be careful about getting so wrapped up in the future that we miss the present.

It started when we were young children. “When I grow up, I want to…” but it never stops until one day we start longing for the past. Time flies and we see that in the lives of the children around us.

But each day is a treasure!

The Help

That's Me in the Middle - 4th from the Left!

Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, a southern society girl returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends’ lives — and a small Mississippi town — upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen, Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, is the first to open up — to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter’s life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories — and as it turns out, they have a lot to say.”

About two weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to attend a pre-screening of the new movie THE HELP.

I remember first seeing the trailer for this during movie previews earlier this year.  I remember, then, wanting to see it.  So I jumped at the opportunity to see it early.  I had not read the book yet, so my only expectations were based on the previews and it completely exceeded those expectations! I laughed one minute, was saddened the next, and inspired all throughout!

It also left me with many questions – mainly regarding others’ perspectives.  What did my parents remember about that time period?  My grandparents?  What would I have done if I was a young adult in that setting?  What  character would I have been most like – one that belittled “the help” or one that empowered them?

I haven’t seen a good, solid movie in a long time.  But this one definitely goes up at the top of my list!  The storyline was wonderful.  The actors (Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer & more) were AMAZING.  And my company (pictured above) was great too!

If you have read the book already, I know you’re probably wondering “but what if you read the book”?  Like I said, I haven’t, but a few of my friends that previewed it did.  And they were not disappointed either!  My only “complaint” with the movie is that I left wanting to know more about the characters.  What happened to them when the movie ended?  And from what I’ve heard, the book does wrap that up more “neatly” than the movie did.  But overall, if you read the book, I definitely think you’ll want to see the movie too!

I don’t want to give too much away, but I do want to know if you see it.  I would LOVE to get your input & “talk” about it.

THE HELP opens nationwide tomorrow, August 10th.  Check out the screenings for both Movies 400 and AMC Theatres Forsyth.

Learn more about THE HELP on Facebook, online, and on Twitter.
