A Trip to “Christmas in Cumming”

The following is a guest post by Jenna S.  Jenna & her family moved to Cumming this summer from their home in Michigan.  They are spending their first Christmas here in Georgia with their four children and we’re really excited she is sharing about her recent visit to “Christmas in Cumming”.  It’s fun to hear about familiar places through the eyes of a new resident!

Have you experienced the Christmas in Cumming lights-set-to-music show yet? We’ve gone TWICE already, and we’ll probably go a few more times.

We threw the kids in the car promising them a chance to see some really cool Christmas lights, but we had NO IDEA just how absolutely amazing they were really going to be. When we pulled onto Bryn Ridge Court in the Haley Farms subdivision, we actually had to wait in line to drop off our donation before being directed to a prime spot in the cul-de-sac from which we could experience the show.

The Sun Roof View!

Not only were our kids totally enamored, but my husband and I were also blown away. Not just by the incredible display set to music (maybe I’m just a first-timer, but I was completely impressed that just some “regular joes” had been able to pull this off!) but by the fact that a group of people would take the time, go through all the fuss, and spend their own money to set up a truly magnificent experience. Not only that but they would stay at home every evening from Thanksgiving until Christmas directing traffic on their street while accepting donations and making sure all the equipment was in good working order just to be able to raise funds and collect items for the local charity, the Forsyth County Family Haven.

Their website, will give you all the information you need about donations you can bring when you come to visit the show. I read in the local paper that last year Family Haven was able to operate for nearly 6 months on the financial and palpable contributions that were donated during last year’s Christmas in Cumming light show!

So while I was caught up in the glitz and glimmer of the lights, swept away by the the sweet, off-key tones of my kids singing with the music while watching a light show from the roof of our mini-van, I was also struck by the vastness of the generosity of the community I live in and so thrilled to live here.
