Boost Your Immune System This Spring & Summer

Boost Your Immunity

The following is a post from Contributing Writer, Dr. Kristin Marchman.  Dr. Marchman is a Licensed Chiropractor at Vickery Chiropractic in Cumming, GA.  And we are thankful to have Vickery Chiropractic as a current website sponsor for Cumming Local.

Boost Your Immune System This Spring and Summer

The beautiful spring weather has officially arrived here in Georgia and, if you are anything like me, the last thing you want is to be stuck indoors due to an illness in your family.  Tips for staying healthy during cold and flu season run rampant, but these tips tend to be less prevalent once the weather warms up.  Since we unfortunately are not exempt to illness once warmer weather arrives, I would like to share some natural ways to boost your immune system this spring and summer.

The best way to avoid illness is not about avoiding everyone around you who is “sick,” but more about maintaining a healthy, well-functioning immune system. By keeping your immune system in optimal working order, you become far less likely to acquire an illness, and if you do, you are better prepared to move through it without complications and return back to optimal health more quickly.

Here are some tips for staying healthy this spring and summer:

  • Get outside.  Recent research has shown that optimizing your vitamin D levels is one of the best ways to naturally fight disease.  Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy with your family after a walk and soak up those rays of sunshine.  If sun exposure is limited, an oral vitamin D3 supplement is the next best option.
  • Get active.  This is a great thing to do outside while soaking up some Vitamin D.  Find out what your family likes to do outdoors and have fun with it. Walks, bike riding, and skating are great ideas as well as many outdoor sports that can be played as a family.  Exercise increases your circulation and blood flow throughout the body. The components of your immune system are also better circulated, which allows it to function optimally. As always, be sure to stay hydrated.  Water is best and coconut water is a great natural alternative to sugary sports drinks.
  • Get adjusted.  Chiropractic isn’t just for back pain and headaches.  By keeping the spine aligned, you are not only helping your nervous system function at 100%, but your immune system as well.
  • Get the right foods in your stomach.  Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day and buy organic and local when possible.  Spring and summer are the perfect times to find local produce in the area.  Also, do your best to avoid sugar and processed foods. Sugar impairs the quality of your immune response almost immediately.  It also can decimate your beneficial bacteria and feed pathogenic yeast and viruses. Sugar can be consumed in moderation if you are healthy, but the last thing you should be eating when you aren’t feeling well is sugar.
  • Get your gut flora levels on track. The bacteria in your gut have enormous control of your immune response. The best way to improve your beneficial bacteria ratio is to avoid sugars, as they feed pathogenic bacteria. Additionally, processed foods and many grains should be limited and replaced with healthy fats such as coconut oil, avocados, olive oil, eggs, and nuts. A quality probiotic supplement will replenish the “good” bacteria that your body needs.
  • Get natural antibiotics to use if needed. Examples of these include garlic, colloidal silver, and coconut oil. These work like broad-spectrum antibiotics against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in your body. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, they do not lead to resistance and have less, if any, side effects.
  • Get plenty of rest. Our bodies need sleep to regenerate and re-energize each night.  Just as it becomes harder to accomplish daily tasks when you are tired, it is much harder to fight illness when the body is overly fatigued.
  • Get to know the best tools to address the stresses in your life. We all face stress every day, but when stress becomes overwhelming, your body becomes less able to fight illness.  Whether you turn to prayer, exercise, or relaxation techniques when you need to de-stress, find something that works well for you.
  • Get happy.  It sounds cliché, but a positive mental attitude can do a lot for your health.  Do something that makes you happy every day, whether it’s a random act of kindness to brighten someone’s day or simply thinking of all the things you have to be thankful for and taking a moment to remember all of them.

My goal as a chiropractor is not only to keep my patients pain free, but also to help them achieve their best level of health.  I believe that following the above guidelines will help to keep your immune system functioning at its optimal level this spring and summer, so you can fully enjoy the upcoming warm months with your family.

Local Theatre Productions in Forsyth County

This following is a guest post by local Contributor, Kathy of House of Hills.  Kathy is sharing some of her family’s personal experiences and also giving us the scoop on some local productions in Forsyth County.

Local Theatre Productions in Forsyth County

We’ve got tons of drama going on over at the House of Hills. Not just your typical tween drama (which there is plenty of), but actual drama—as in musical theater type drama. My Maggie has been involved in musical theater for almost two years now. It’s pretty much taken over our lives.

This weekend, Maggie isn’t in a show, but we’re still heading to the theater. Why? Because Maggie is doing the makeup for the show Aladdin Kids at Off Broadway. Yes, the makeup.

See that picture of my girl. She was a great monkey without the makeup, but the makeup made her character come to life even more. After doing that show (Seussical), Maggie decided she wanted to try doing makeup too!

If you know anything about the House of Hills, you know that we encourage trying new things that catch your interest. So, I’ve spent hours in the makeup aisles, being the test subject and even teaching how to apply eyeliner. Our awesome friends at Off Broadway have encouraged her interest too. She makes her debut as makeup artist this weekend with the production of Aladdin Kids.

Aladdin Kids is an adorable production of the classic Aladdin story in thirty-five minutes. The cast ranges from kids ages four to twelve, and they are so much fun to watch. I saw dress rehearsal and giggled through the whole thing. They’re having so much fun that you can’t help but have fun too.

If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids this coming weekend or just want to introduce them to children’s theater, I recommend heading down to catch the show. For more information, visit  Off Broadway.

Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy in Duluth GA

Cumming Local was given the opportunity to review the current Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy Tour through complimentary tickets from Feld Entertainment.  Writer, Rachael Walkup, attended the show with her two young children – 3 years and almost 1.

DisneyOnIce1

I told my 3 year old I had a big surprise for him. We would have to drive there but he would get to see something that he really loves! When we pulled up to the Arena of Gwinnett Center, my son had no clue where we were. We walked in seeing lots of little girls dressed as princesses and boys as Buzz Lightyear.

The big surprise was that we were seeing the Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy show! Finn, my 3-year-old son, could not believe his eyes.

DisneyOnIce2

The show was very exciting! We got to see Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy. They were the hosts so that was fun! But once Lighting McQueen and Mater came out, Finn was so shocked he just put his face in his hands. Too cute! Some other characters we saw were Tink, Woody, Buzz, and many other friends.

DisneyOnIce3

Needless to say, it was an awesome morning! Even my almost one year old stayed put and watched the whole show. I highly recommend you get tickets for you and your kids!

Sponsor Spotlight: North Georgia Vein Institute

Cumming Local is pleased to spotlight our website Sponsor – North Georgia Vein Institute.   We’ve enjoyed learning more about their facility and services and hope you do to.

North Georgia Vein Institute

Sponsor Spotlight:  North Georgia Vein Institute

For the last couple of months, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know some of the team at North Georgia Vein Institute in Cumming, GA.  And I have very quickly picked up on one thing – they are wealth of information when it comes to the treatment of varicose & spider veins!

I have spider veins – I’ve had them for many, many years.  I’ve actually been to two practices over the years for consultations about having the veins treated, but honestly I left each of them unimpressed, unsure of what was involved and somewhat scared too!!  However, I recently sat down with Barbara Smart, manager of North Georgia Vein Institute and I can honestly say I left knowledgeable about the process and excited to one day (hopefully soon) get treatment!  She actually explained the process from start to finish in a way that was understandable – in real language – not all doctor talk!   I was very thankful for that.

In fact, she told me later that she probably told me much more than I ever wanted to know, but it’s because she really enjoys working with the services they provide – she enjoys her work & what she does!   But that attitude seems to go through the entire team – it’s how North Georgia Vein wants to run their practice in general – they want to be personal, take the time to take care of you.  So you don’t feel like a number or file chart.  And they know they’re helping people in the process!

Do you have spider or varicose veins?

If you have spider or varicose veins, you can easily check out what North Georgia Vein has to offer – through their free consultations & screenings.

In a Free Vein Screening, a basic visual screening is done and a medical history is taken by a nurse or medical technologist to help determine possible causes of the problems you are experiencing.  A detailed discussion takes place addressing your concerns and issues. Then a brief ultrasound scan of the legs is done. This will determine if you have venous insufficiency.

Based upon these preliminary findings the team at North Georgia Vein will help you determine next steps.  And more times than not, those next steps involve insurance.  Approximately 97% of their patience have procedures that are paid for by insurance.  North Georgia Vein will help with that entire process – from pre-certification to possible appeals, and making sure you understand your benefits, co-pays, and co-insurance.

Not only will you receive support from the business side of things, but most importantly you’ll receive treatment under the care of Dr. Peter Wrobel – a skilled physician experienced in diagnosing and treating vein disorders for 18 years.  Whether you suffer from spider or varicose veins due to heredity, obesity, or your profession, Dr. Wrobel has studied all types of diagnosis and care.  Through his practice he’s committed to “renewing the way you look & feel”!

Schedule a FREE Consultation & Screening:

Contact North Georgia Vein Institute to schedule your free vein screening on one of the follow upcoming dates:

  • Friday April 19th & Saturday April 20th
  • Friday April 26th
  • Fridays, May 3rd , 10th , 17th & 24th
  • Saturdays, May 4th, 18th

Take Advantage of the Wellness Facility:

While you’re there, be sure to check out all the other great Med-Spa services that you can receive under the same roof!  From BOTOX and JUVEDERM® to esthetician services like facials, microdermabrasion, body scrubs, massages and even weight loss and chiropractic services under Dr. Michael Klein – the facility has everything you need to help you look & feel your very best!

And it’s perfect timing to take advantage of these Spring 2013 Specials:

The Croods Movie Review

The Croods Movie Review

Two weekends ago, my family had the opportunity to preview the brand new 20th Century Fox movie, The Croods.  Going into it I had only seen one preview and I thought then that it looked pretty cute.  The preview highlighted both a great message about a family working together and also had some good humor in it too.

I recalled it also being from the same people that brought us How to Train Your Dragon, which my kids LOVED so I was looking forward to this new adventure.

I’ll be completely honest (as always on this website) and say it started a little slow for me.  But then again, I’m not its target audience!  However it soon picked up and I was caught up in the family’s adventure!

The cave-man family (the Croods) is forced out of their cave when their home is destroyed.  Together they are trying to reach a new land but come upon lots of obstacles.  I really liked the idea of highlighting the family working together.  A lot of movies are about a son or daughter finding their own way without the rest of the family.  So I really appreciated this take.

Now don’t get me wrong – there is family strife!  The pre-teen (or maybe teenage) daughter is very independent and out spoken.  She has a plan and isn’t afraid to step outside of her parent’s boundaries.  And the mother-in-law and son-in-law definitely have lots to argue about!  But the point is, they’re traveling on this mission together.  They all have to accept new ways of doing things and step outside their comfort zone.

The Dad is set up as kind of the “bad guy” in the whole thing, so of course my husband didn’t like those parts – ha!

But my kids – they loved it all!  They thought the silly parts were hysterical and the cool parts were awesome!  They’ve already asked when they can see it again – good thing it comes out to theaters this weekend!

So those are just my thoughts … I’d love to hear yours!

For another perspective, check out Common Sense Media.

More about The Croods:

The Croods is a 3D comedy adventure that follows the world’s first modern family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always been their home, is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods are rocked by generational clashes and seismic shifts as they discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures — and their outlook is changed forever.

Traveling with Kids: Sanity Tips

The following is a post from Contributing Writer Jenny Reed. Jenny, through her business – Our Cruise Planner, helps her clients in Cumming and nationwide take the vacations of their dreams. Traveling With Kids:  Sanity Tips

Traveling with your children can be a fantastic way to bond with them, show them the world, make memories to last a lifetime, and feed your family’s sense of adventure. On the flip side, traveling with your children also means having to sit for a long time in a vehicle or an airplane and listening to “Are we there yet?” repeatedly.

Here are a few tips to keep you sane during this journey:

It’s All about Music
- Music soothes the savage beast. And it works on kids too! Load your music players and car CD changers with music the whole family enjoys.

Listen to Books
- With the huge market of kid books out there, there is a tremendous number available as audio files. These stories last for hours and will keep your child entranced for some time.

It is Snack Time
- Food is fuel especially on a road trip or flight. Try to stay away from sugary snacks but provide healthy items like fruit and whole grain snacks. Freeze juice pouches and keep in a small cooler as they will thaw out in time for a refreshing snack break.

Create Car Games
- Stay away from the held kind of game, instead create the kind that use their imagination. These can include “I Spy with My Eye” or license plate games such as counting to see how many different states you can find, or try to make a sentence with the letters in a passing car’s license plate.

Break out the Puzzle Books
- Puzzle books are great because they take the child’s attention away amount of time in car or plane, and generally have big enough print to be able to read easily in a moving car. Try to avoid reading books, unless on a plane, the small print with the moving car could equal a sick child.

Plan Your Trip Wisely
- Try to leave as early as possible on a car trip, bring your child’s favorite pillow and they’ll sleep for the better portion of the trip. Also, get the kids involved in the vacation planning as well such as highlighting on a map where you will be traveling.

Make Frequent Stops
- This isn’t really realistic when you’re flying, but is a must option in the car. Take this extra time as it can make the trip more bearable for children.   Getting out stretching their legs and looking at the scenery is sometimes all they need to get them through to the next stop. Also, stopping at the state visitor’s centers is a great way to learn fun fact about the state and the region. Pack a picnic and make an adventure out of it!

There are always times during a long trip where everybody gets a little antsy, even the adults. Try some of these tips on your next trip and everyone will arrive happier and less stressful.

Ten Ways to Earn Money Taking Surveys

I often refer to that time in my life before children & when I worked out of the home as “my former life”.  It’s just that it feels like it was many moons ago!

So in my “former life” I worked in the Market Research world.  I really loved my job a lot.  We studied the usability of different products, applications, and websites.  Basically determining if they were user-friendly or not.  Much of my work involved lining up participants for focus group and one-on-one sessions.  The participants loved me because they knew I was the one that would be handing them a check at the end of the day!

Did you know people can make money participating in research studies?

Below, through Escalate Network, I’ve compiled a list of 10 ways to earn money taking surveys at home.  These surveys help businesses with planning and help participants at the same time.  Please know this post is not a personal endorsement by me.  I have used some of these in the past but some I have yet researched or looked into further.  So please do your own research and definitely only sign up with ones that feel reputable to  you.
