Whole Foods Budgeting 101

The following is a guest post by Cumming Resident Anna Everhart.  Anna is a wife, mother, author, blogger and someone I’m happy to know personally! So many of us have a desire to eat real, clean, whole food but often struggle with the thought that good food is also more expensive food.  Today, Anna’s sharing some very basic concepts and tips for eating locally grown, organic food … on a budget!

Whole Foods Budgeting 101 by Anna Everhart

2012 has brought me a task of super mommy epic proportions.  Or, that is, my husband Jeremy has charged me with coming up with a grocery budget of $400 while still eating locally grown, organic food.  “Oh, that will be easy honey!” I say as I bite my lip and grab a pen and paper.  One thing that makes budgeting so easy with local food is that it’s a flat rate with no extra tax.  I know exactly to the dollar what my grocery bill will be!  OK, I have THAT going for me….but not much else!

Feeding a family of 4 good wholesome food on $400/month, is…a stretch.  BUT, I have to do it, so I thought I would share this information with you!  I am sure many of us are in  budget crunch mode.  Truth be told, I could sacrifice quality and have more money for…what…snack food?  McDonald’s?  But, what good will that do for our health?  NO, I am staying the course and enforcing our whole food lifestyle, and I am super mommy, budget green extraordinaire, and I am going to DO THIS!

Will you join me?  Will you make 2012 your healthiest year yet while staying on a budget fit for a lower middle class family?  Let’s forge ahead, shall we?

Mother’s Day – Celebrating & Remembering

The following is a Guest Post by Contributing Writer, Heather Clark.  Ms. Clark is the Director for Act Together Ministries in South Forsyth County.  This was on my heart, but Heather expressed it in words perfectly and I’m so thankful she shared it with us!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.

Thank you for the sacrifices you make. For staying up all night with a sick child, for helping with homework, running the family taxi to endless ball games, and for all the things you do to keep the household running smoothly. May your day be blessed with flowers, breakfast in bed, extra chores from the kids, handmade crafts, and time to yourself.

But during this special day to celebrate motherhood, please take a moment to say a prayer for those around you who may be struggling or hurting on this day. There are so many different situations that often go overlooked.

We send our love and prayers to

  • The children and adults who’ve lost their mother. We’re so sorry for your loss. May you take this special day to remember your mother.
  • Those who have difficult relationships with their mother due to abuse or struggles from the past. Forgive us when we judge you. May God heal the wounds in your heart.
  • The lady who wants nothing more than to become a mother. Maybe you aren’t married, maybe you’re infertile, or perhaps you lost a child this year. Know that you are not alone and it’s not your fault.
  • The mother who cares for her chronically or terminally sick child day in and day out. May you feel cherished for the mother that you are.
  • Our military families- the mother whose son or daughter is protecting our country or the wife of young children whose spouse is overseas. May we remember to honor you for your great sacrifice.
  • The single mother who works 50 hours per week and her children are too young to realize it’s Mother’s day. You are not forgotten.
  • The grieving mother whose child is no longer with us. May we mourn with you. Forgive us when we’re naïve enough to think time heals all wounds.
  • The faithful mother who made no more mistakes than the rest of us yet her child ran away, is on drugs, or mistreats her. May God grant you the peace that passes understanding and may we be a shoulder for you to cry on.
  • The woman who serves as a mother to many. Perhaps you are a teacher, a foster mom, or a mentor. We praise you because you certainly do not get the appreciation you deserve.
  • The mother of a severe special needs child. This is not what motherhood was supposed to look like, this is not what you imagined when you played “house” with your dolls as a child. You endure more than most of us can imagine and we applaud you.
  • The teenager who is expecting a baby. Thank you for choosing life for your child, for enduring an emotional roller coaster, and for sacrificing months of your life to carry the pregnancy to term.

May God open our eyes to the hardships and pain around us. While it’s great to celebrate, let’s remember those who can’t or have a difficult time doing so. And for those who are hurting, let’s be happy for those who have much to celebrate.

Forsyth County Relay for Life: A Survivor’s Story

The Forsyth County Relay for Life will be held this weekend – May 11th & 12th to benefit the American Cancer Society.  I (Mandi) am excited to be walking for the first time this year.  I’ll walk in honor & in memory of my Aunt Sandy.

The following is a Guest Post from Maggie Paoletti.  I’m honored that Maggie is sharing her story with us.  I’m also teary-eyed from reading her words.  And she said she’s not a writer, but I disagree!

My name is Maggie Paoletti and although I am a lot of different things, I am not a writer. The upcoming Relay For Life event will mark my 11th year participating. The significance of the event has changed for me over the years. Relay for Life is a great way to support the ongoing efforts of the American Cancer Society, to whom I owe my life.

In May of 2002 a dear friend approached me to ask a favor. I’m employed by Forsyth County Schools as an Instructional Technology Specialist and Lori McClure was confident that I had the skills to help her out. It was a week before Relay and Lori was tasked with collecting names for luminaries to honor cancer survivors and remember those people who had lost their battle with cancer. So what was it she needed from me? The names she gathered were supposed to scroll during the luminaria service. She wondered if I could find a way to make that happen. I willingly accepted and so began my journey with Relay for Life.

That first year I received the names a few at a time – a list here, a scrap of paper there, maybe an email or ten . . . but lo and behold I put together a scrolling of names and we were able to share those names during the luminaria service. My husband, Dale, and I attended that first year without knowing anything about Relay. We weren’t aware of all the hard work and fund raising efforts, all designed to support the American Cancer Society. Time went by and each year Dale and I gained a better understanding of the purpose of Relay and I streamlined and “perfected” the process for scrolling the names during the luminaria service, which Felice Scholtes was now responsible for collecting.

Then life as I knew it changed. In November of 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through the extensive testing processes it was determined that I may also have had ovarian cancer, thankfully I did NOT! By the time we arrived at Relay for Life in 2008 I had been through 6 surgeries and two rounds of chemo. I had missed 9 weeks of work, but returned with determination. As I prepared the names for the luminaria service, it was difficult to see my name among them.

We arrived at the fairgrounds on Friday evening with all of the usual equipment: laptops, screens, projectors and speakers. I was told to report to the Survivor tent to get a shirt. Next to the shirts were stickers that said “Celebrating ___ years as a Survivor”. I remember saying, “Well I don’t feel like I’ve survived anything yet. I feel like I’ve been run over by a Mac truck!” I had called some friends, Greg and Clint, and warned them that they had better not show up with more hair than I had on my head – which was none!

Maggie at Relay for Life 2008

Walking the Survivor lap with Dale was one of the most memorable events in my life. I was bald. My incisions were strained. My body ached with the side effects of Taxotere, Cytoxin, and Neulasta that I received just days before. My eyes were filled with tears. My heart was filled with gratitude and love. As we made our way around the track our eyes rested on all of the people who had helped and supported us through this journey. Being from Wisconsin our families were concerned that we were alone. We had assured them we were not alone. Looking around that track we realized that friends are the family you get to PICK and let me tell you, we have a LOT of FAMILY in Georgia.

Walking at Relay for Life

Funds raised each year at Relay For Life are used by the American Cancer Society for research, development of treatments and support programs & services. Road to Recovery is a program designed to provide transportation to patients in need. Look Good, Feel Better is a program that provides women with tips, tricks, wigs and make up to help them through their treatments. The Hope Lodge in Atlanta is one of 31 facilities that are funded by the American Cancer Society. It is a place where cancer patients and their caregivers can find help and hope when home is far away from treatment. These are just a few of the ways your dollars make a difference. Please join us at Relay For Life – and I promise to wave at you during the Survivor Lap. Thanks to treatments developed with funding of the American Cancer Society, although I’m not a writer, I am a Survivor!

Cumming Dance Academy: Open Registration and Discount

It may be the heat of the Summer, but it’s also the time to think about Fall.  As in Fall Registration for dance & performing arts at the Cumming Dance Academy (CDA).

CDA has always had a lot to offer, but with the launch of their new Performance Academy and additions to their already extensive Dance Classes, you’ll definitely recognize their recent growth!

Just take a look at all the new classes being offered beginning Fall 2012 and you’ll see what I mean:

  • Music, Mommy & Me (18 mos – 2 yrs)

  • All Boys Hip Hop (6yrs & up)
  • Mini Jazz (5 yrs)
  • Beginner Hip Hop (2nd – 3rd grade)
  • Broadway Jazz (2nd – 3rd grade)
  • Intermediate Hip Hop (4th – 5th grade)
  • Intermediate Lyrical (4th – 5th grade)

  • Stretch, Strengthening & Conditioning

All of this is in addition to the popular classes that CDA is known for such as Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Pointe, Lyrical, Performance Composition, Kinder-Gym, Acro-Cheer, and even Celtic Dance.

Cumming Dance Academy has been voted as the Best Dance Studio in Cumming for the past three consecutive years in a local publication. Parents & dancers alike love CDA!

Why are parents choosing Cumming Dance Academy for their children?

  • For excellent instructors: Instructors at CDA are either college graduate of prestigious dance programs, have performed professionally, have trained under CDA’s Artistic Director in the CDA Teachers’ Training Program or have degrees from an accredited college in the form of education / theatre arts.
  • For great prices & schedules: CDA follows the same scheduled closings as Forsyth County Schools, with the exception that classes are held on Early Release Days, MLK & President’s Day.  They actually teach 34 weeks per season, building in two extra weeks in the event of inclement weather or unexpected closings.  Prices are very competitive and discounts are offered for both siblings and multiple classes.
  • For a very fair make-up policy: Sickness, vacations, and missed classes are expected and CDA has made it easy to make-up.  All missed classes may be made up in other classes – without a time limit!
  • For a convenient & great location: Just off the Cumming Square, CDA’s Tribble Gap location is centrally located within Cumming & Forsyth County.  And the location is enjoyable for both the dancers & the waiting family – large & modern studios, advanced sprung floors, sibling playroom & free wi-fi.

In fact it’s for those reasons that I chose Cumming Dance Academy for my little ballerina!  And it’s for those reasons plus the fact that she loves her teachers, Miss Hannah & Miss Julie, that we’ll be back for the 2012-2013 dance season!

So, do you have a Dancer or Performing Arts Student to get enrolled?

We’ve got an excellent offer for all Cumming Local Readers!  Present the below coupon to CDA by June 30th and receive FREE Registration for one student!  That’s a $40 savings.  Take a look at the 2012-2013 Registration Packet.  Find the class perfect for your family & then take advantage of this great offer!

Young Writers {And Presenters}: Free Rice

Throughout the 2011-2012 School Year, we’ve been lucky enough to have several guest posts from Mr. Walkup’s 3rd grade class at Vickery Creek Elementary School.  Today we’re sharing something a little different, but still very exciting indeed!  This project was recently presented in Mr. Walkup’s classroom by his third grade student Hannah T.  Hannah become really passionate about an organization called FreeRice.com.  So passionate that she created a Prezi project to present to her classmates.

Mr. Walkup explains that “the site has really caught on with my classroom as not only a way to learn, but also help others and change our world.

Personally, I think it’s pretty cool when students become passionate enough about something, that they’ll take the time to spread awareness about it!

Hannah said “I’m passionate about Free Rice because it’s a way of learning while feeding those in need.  More than 100,000 people die each day from hunger and this is a way we can decrease that amount.”

So, I present …

Guest Post: Grace for who you were Before

The following is a guest post by Cumming Resident Anna Everhart.  Anna is a wife, mother, author, blogger and someone I’m happy to know personally!  I’m looking forward to featuring several upcoming posts from Anna but am very excited about today’s post.  She’s sharing her heart about a situation many of us in today’s economy can probably relate too.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did!

Grace for who you were Before

Here I am with my adorable and sweet husband, Jeremy. This pic was taken in 2005, a few months before we got married. A few months before we decided to pack up our belongings and life in Indianapolis, IN and move to Cumming, GA for a wealth of opportunities, exciting change, and a unique adventure ….

Photograph by Lindsey White

Pretty quickly after moving to GA, I realized, or felt like, it was a big mistake. We really wanted to get away from everything we knew, even though we loved it, and establish our family unit away from pretty much everything- For just a few years- and then we could move back!

We could, you know, buy a house, have a cool experience exploring the region, and then sell the house, make a profit and move back to the Midwest when we were ready to have a family. My plan would have worked so well had we not had this pesky recession and a beautiful surprise package from a stork!!

All My Strength

The following is a guest post by Cumming Resident, Author, and Marathon Runner, Eddie Robbins.  Eddie is sharing his personal journey and story in his new book, All My Strength.

I grew up in Roswell in the 60s as a preacher’s kid. Life was simple. We enjoyed friends, family and food. We really enjoyed food. Everything we did was surrounded by good Southern cuisine. As a result, some of us became overweight.  My Dad passed away with diabetes at the age of 53. He didn’t take care of himself and was overweight. You would think I would have learned a lesson and lived a healthy life but I did not.

I went to Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. I got married and had 3 daughters. We lived in Norcross for years and moved to Cumming in 1994. I was a professional photographer for most of those years. All the while, my weight was increasing to a peak weight of 333 pounds. How did this happen to me? I knew better. It just did. No excuses.

On July 16, 2009, I lived the day that changed my life. Many things happened that led to this change including being 54 years old, 1 year older than my Dad when he died. Having the doctor tell me “the first symptom of a heart attack is a heart attack.” Hearing the great personal motivator, Jim Rohn say “the best day of your life is the day you say ‘I HAD it’” It was the day I found myself totally disgusted with me. I decided that I had HAD it. I was tired of being overweight and was going to change my life.

Once I made the decision, I had to have a plan. My plan was to walk 25 miles a week and simply cut back on the calorie and fat intake. So, I did. I lost 110 pounds in 16 months. I am so thankful for Forsyth County’s park system. I utilized Central Park to walk. On cold or rainy days, I went into the gym to walk. Eventually, I began to jog a little just to get my heart rate up. One day, at Central Park, I jogged a whole mile without stopping. That event led me to strive to become a runner. I entered a 5k in Canton on Thanksgiving of 2009. I enjoyed the running event atmosphere. I have run in many events in Forsyth County. I am also running in other states.

I set a goal of running a full marathon after running in the Disney Half Marathon on January 2011. I decided on the Chicago Marathon on October 9, 2011. Again, Forsyth County aided me with the wonderful Big Creek Greenway. It is my favorite place to run. I did all of my marathon training there. What a beautiful place that the county does an amazing job keeping it clean and available for runners and bikers alike. So, I did the Chicago Marathon and continue to run in events. This year, I have a goal of running in 5 additional states, giving me 15 states in which I have run in events.

In just a few years, I have gone from over 300 pounds to running a marathon. My friends and family suggested that I write a book (All My Strength) about my experience in hopes it would help others who feel there is no hope. There is hope! If I can do it, so can you. You may not become a runner. You may be a walker, a biker or a hiker. The bottom line is to do something and change your life for fitness and healthy living!

Sponsor Spotlight: Southern Way Insurance

Southern Way Insurance

Earlier this year, my husband was on a mission to update insurance policies for our house and automobiles.  We had been with the same company for about ten years.  And while we didn’t have a major compliant or issue to cause the change, we knew that we were simply another number to this large & big-box insurance carrier.

The main mission at Cumming Local is to introduce you to as many locally owned & operated businesses as possible.  And in the process, I’ve taken this mission to heart for my own family by shopping locally more & more.  So it was only natural to start looking close to home for our new insurance quotes too.

We began working with Craig Crawford at Southern Way Insurance.  Craig & his family live in Forsyth County (actually in our neighborhood!) & he knows what’s going on in our hometown.  He was able to get started on our quotes very quickly after he listened to our needs & learned more about what we were looking to insure.  In the end, he was sitting down at our kitchen table as we signed paperwork for our new coverage – that was both perfect for our needs and at a price that was better than we had been previously paying.

Have you reviewed your different insurance policies recently?

As an independent insurance agency, relationships are key – both with their Clients & with the Insurance Carriers that Southern Way represents.  Since 1990, they have worked hard to achieve prominent positions with those insurance companies. And these long-term relationships enable Southern Way to better serve their clients, even allowing them to attain coverage and deliver services that aren’t readily available elsewhere.

Southern Way provides the following coverage:

  • Home Insurance
  • Auto Insurance
  • Business Insurance
  • Motorcycle, RV, & Boat Insurance
  • and a variety of others too

But beyond providing coverage and competitive rates, Craig & the Southern Way team’s primary goal is to be your trusted advisor.  If you’re not sure where to start, what type of coverage you really need, or what additional valuables should be covered, the Southern Way team will guide you along in the process.

Ready for Your Complimentary Quote:

You can always use their Online Quote Form (simply select the coverage your looking to quote from the options on the left side), but why not take advantage of their personal, one-on-one help and connect with the Southern Way team today!

Chiropractic Care for Children

The following is a post from Contributing Writer, Dr. Kristin Marchman.  Dr. Marchman is a Licensed Chiropractor at Vickery Chiropractic in Cumming, GA.

Chiropractic Care for Children

Most parents take their children to the doctor for regular checkups of their teeth, eyes, and ears.  However, not many parents think to take their children for regular spinal checkups. Spinal stress begins as early as birth.  Trauma to the spine during the birth process can lead to issues such as colic, nursing difficulties, and chronic infections in babies.  Many parents choose to have their newborn baby checked by a chiropractor immediately after birth.  Just a tiny misalignment in the spine can have a tremendous effect on the overall health of a new baby.

As children grow and learn to walk, the inevitable falls and bumps can further affect the developing bones of the spine and skull.  Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas.  If the correction is made early in life, many associated health complaints can be avoided during adulthood.

While chiropractic has helped babies and children with everything from ear infections to digestive issues to sleeping problems, it is important to understand that chiropractors do not treat specific conditions or diseases. The skill of a chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function.  It is the function of the nervous system that affects overall body function and health.

During a chiropractic visit, the chiropractor will take a case history and perform an exam to determine if there are any misalignments in the spine or extremities.  The bones of babies and children are much different from those of adults and are adjusted differently as well.  The adjustment is gentle and specific to the child’s developing structures.  Many parents report that their children enjoy their adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits.  They also report that their children experience a greater level of health when under regular chiropractic care.
