The Young Actors Ensemble will present “Schoolhouse Rock” in an upcoming show featuring students from all over the metro area, including some from Cumming & Forsyth County.  Not only would this make a fun family night out event, but it will also be a perfect opportunity to see what your child could do at Forefront Arts.

Performances at the New Dawn Theatre in Duluth will be as follows:

  • May 18th – 7pm
  • May 19th – 2pm
  • Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Summer Camps at Forefront Arts

Join Forefront Arts for an exciting week of Camp!

During the June 4th – 8th Drama Camp in Johns Creek, students will participate in creative play, music & dance rehearsals, fun theatre games, crafts, and rehearsals … all culminating in an exciting show of “How to Eat Like a Child“  on Friday!  They’ll be exposed to many aspects of live theatre including auditions, line memorization, movement, music, blocking, theatrical makeup, and set & costume design.  It will be a great combination of work AND play hard!

All are welcome – novice & experienced!

Forefront Arts - 2011 Showcase

Registration for the 2012-2013 Season is now open and already filling up. You’ll find a great line-up of classes being offered at its Johns Creek location, including:

  • Creative Dramatics – Young performers will begin to build their confidence & creativity as their experience fun theatre games, music, puppetry, crafts & other creative activities.
  • Musical Theatre:  Annie - Students will learn acting technique, theatre etiquette & terminology, all while bringing characters & songs to life from the popular production, Annie.
  • Improvisation – Learn how to think on your feet & perform as an ensemble without a script!
  • Musical Theatre: Seussical the Musical - Students will receive instruction in basic music theory, work on singing & dancing skills while preparing for a showcase performance of Seussical The Musical.
  • Acting – This class will be tailored to each student’s experience level – learning how to make strong choices using their faces, voices & bodies to portray different characters.
  • Young Actors Ensemble – Students will learn all about the different elements that go into a successful theatrical production, while working towards the end goal – a full-length Broadway musical!

Young Actors Ensemble

Forefront Arts - 2011 Showcase

Registration is currently open for the Young Actors Ensemble for the 2012-2013 Season.  The Young Actors will rehearse weekly in Johns Creek and perform a full-length Broadway Jr musical at a local theatre upon the completion of the Season.  Students age 7 through 17 are invited to join the ensemble for the production of “Flat Stanley Jr“.  In addition to rehearsals, students will receive further training in auditioning & theatre etiquette, music theory, singing & dancing, along with drama games & the overall experience of learning to work as an ensemble.  Professional actors, vocalists & choreographers will work with the cast to help them reach their full potential!

Ensemble classes will be held at Johns Creek Presbyterian Church on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30pm weekly.

A Weekend of greatMOEments

If you follow our Facebook page (and you do, right?), you probably caught an update last month about me hanging out at Moe’s.  Not just hanging out at Moe’s, but also with Moe’s – as in many of the executives from the Moe’s Corporate office.

My family has been a fan of Moe’s Southwest Grill for quite some time – we’re fans of the food, the music, the prices, the Kids Eat Free nights, and even the signature “Welcome to Moe’s” greeting that confirms you’re in the right place each time!  And I was SUPER excited when they rolled out their “Food Mission“:

… to bring the highest quality ingredients to every guest, every day, everywhere.  We’re always focused on the best possible option – from vegetarian to low calorie ingredients to a variety of ingredients without rBGH, steroids, added preservatives or MSG.

So when I was asked to be a part of this weekend with Moe’s, I was really excited & honored to be a part of the opportunity.  In fact, it’s actually more than just a weekend with Moe’s.  It’s part of a relationship as I’m a member of their Blogger Advisory Board for the year.  So, what does that mean?  I’ll get to share new menu options, contests, giveaways, and help us all be in the know!

This past weekend, was just a “get to know everyone” kind of event – we got to learn more about the Moe’s Food Mission, about the team as individuals, about the other eight bloggers on the Board, and about some of the new food that will be coming out on the Menu soon.

The weekend started with a private party at an Atlanta Moe’s.   The nine of us walked into the signature “Welcome to Moe’s” greeting and that was quickly followed up by a bunch of squealing adult woman when we saw our place settings and personalized chef coats!

We kicked the night off with a show-down … Moe’s style!  We were split into two groups, given a variety of fresh ingredients, one VERY large knife, and a challenge – to make salsa!  My team, the Salsa Superstars, went with a fruity salsa, including mangoes, pineapples, peppers, and roasted poblano.  The result?  I must say it was DELICIOUS!  And take note because Moe’s is actually hosting a “Salsa Competition” very soon, with a pretty cool grand prize, so start perfecting your recipe & stay tuned for more details on that!

Sidenote: That bottom picture is of the President of Moe’s, Paul, trying our finished product.  Now I can’t quote him word for word, but I think he said something along the lines of “that’s wonderful, that’s great, that’s the best salsa I’ve ever had” … ok, not exactly right, but I think he did like it at least!

After us amateurs were done it was time to bring in the pros!  We were treated to four brand new dishes made up by Executive Chef Dan & his team.  They’re currently not on the menu but are coming to select markets soon & then hopefully to the full menu soon after that.  Forget the rest of the country, I just want them to come to Cumming, GA because they were all wonderful!!

#1 – Cuban Quesadilla – (photo courtesy of Hungry Housewife) WOW!!!  Delicious!  Grain-fed Pork, Crisp Bacon, Cucumbers, Moe’s Authentic Cuban Sauce … absolutely loved it!
#2 – Southwestern Cobb Salad – I don’t usually think “salad” when I visit Moe’s, but I am now!  The Southwestern had Romaine Lettuce, Moe’s Southwestern Chicken Salad, Cucumbers, Crisp Bacon, Shredded Cheese, & Fresh Pico!
#3 – The Southwestern Club Chicken Salad Wrap – Chicken Salad, Crisp Bacon, Romaine, Shredded Cheese & Fresh Pico.  Perfect for a hot summer afternoon!
#4 – Chimichurri Burrito – LOVED it! This was probably my favorite.  Grass-fed Sirloin Steak, Grilled Mushrooms, Peppers, Fresh Pico, Seasoned Rice & Moe’s Chimichurri Sauce.  I want one right now!

Next up on the Agenda, was just for fun.  We actually got to go behind the counter & attempt to become Burrito making queens.  I failed miserably!  I assure you I wouldn’t last without lots of training. Unless of course you like super flat burritos;).

Lots more fun was to be had & I can’t wait to share more about it with you later.  As I left that night, I shared with the Executives that I was already a big fan of Moe’s coming into the weekend, but leaving I was even a bigger fan.

I loved hearing the passion behind Chef Dan – about coming up with his creations & about being proud to serve Moe’s good ingredients to his little boy.  I loved hearing the motivation behind the President’s desire to fulfill the Moe’s Food Mission & “doing what is right because it is the right thing to do”.  I loved sitting across from the Vice President & Marketing Executive as we tried the new recipes & chatted about our families while talking about a new kid’s menu coming out and also finding out there’s such thing as Junior-Sized burrito (I had no idea … did you??).

I loved just seeing their team in action!  You get a different perspective of an “Executive Team” when they’re cleaning up your trash & serving your dinner!

A BIG thanks to Moe’s, the other 8 bloggers on the #greatMOEments team & Jessica & Melissa for organizing such a wonderful weekend.

But it’s not really fair for me to talk about eating Moe’s without giving you the chance to eat some too!

Chick-fil-A: Kid’s Meal Giveaway

Chick-fil-A Giveaway …

The new Chick-fil-A kid meals have been out for a little while now.  Has anyone tried the grilled nuggets?  Or maybe more importantly have your kids?  I think it’s a great option – one more nutritious choice to have!  Will I always make that choice … no, not always.  Gosh there’s just something about that fried nugget that Chick-fil-A has perfected so well it’s hard to pass up!!

I know many of us don’t think of “wholesome choices” and McDonald’s as going hand in hand.  Trust me.  I know.  It’s certainly not the first place I think about going when I think about making a healthy meal choice.  But the cool thing I’ve realized as this “campaign” is wrapping up is that it’s all about choices.

I’m currently on a mission to lose 10lbs.  Yes, those same 10lbs as 2 years ago – anyone with me there?!?  So with that, I have to make certain choices – when grocery shopping, when cooking for my family, when going out to eat, when exercising … pretty much all day long.  Each choice I make directly impacts the goal I have.

And nine times out ten, it’s all about planning.  If I plan the week & each day out for me and my family, then things go better.  But if I don’t I tend to fail miserably at flying by the seat of my pants.  And then there are those days that I do plan great but the morning doesn’t go as planned and I can’t get breakfast in my mouth before getting the kids out to school, a morning meeting runs late and I can’t get lunch before picking up the kids from school, or I turn on the Slow Cooker but forget to plug it in (anyone relate to that one?!?).

So, how do I handle those days? I can either choose to make a horrible choice or I can choose to make the best choice I can.  And sometimes making the best choice I can, is a day to be proud of!

Recently, I’ve found two secret weapons (at the unexpected McDonalds) that help me in those circumstances.:

1. Fruit & Yogurt Parfait - part of the new Wholesome Breakfast (but it’s served ALL day).  Made with creamy, low-fat yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, & crunchy granola.  At just 160 calories, it’s a great start to the day or mid-afternoon snack for me!

If you’re not a fan of yogurt, I hear the oatmeal is pretty good!  McDonald’s offers a variety of whole-grain oatmeal choices on its breakfast menu, available all day.  The Fruit & Maple Oatmeal & the Apple Cinnamon Walnut Oatmeal are both 100% natural whole grain oats, rich in fiber and freshly prepared for you.

2.  McDonald’s Premium Salads – several varieties to choose from, large portions, Newman’s Own dressing, a water to drink & I’m good to go!

The Cumming Harvest: Support Locally Grown {GIVEAWAY}

Have you heard of this great resource right here in Cumming?

What is it?

The Cumming Harvest was founded in August 2010 by the Suzanne Geddes & Lynn Pugh. It brings local farmers – in and around Cumming, GA – that all grow their harvest using strict standards and producing everything without chemicals! It is similar to a CSA or Co-Op, but also very different. I’ve never been able to get on board with a traditional CSA because most times you don’t have control over what you receive.  You’re simply delivered a basket each week of a variety of foods – which you may or may not like!!  The difference with The Cumming Harvest is that YOU – the buyer – get to pre-order your basket each week! That means you only order & receive what your family wants to eat, yet you still get the great benefits of local, chemical free food!

How does it work?

Each Wednesday morning, the online market goes live!  Simply place your order via the online shopping cart. The market closes at 8pm every Thursday (giving you two days to shop).  And on Saturday morning between 10am to 12Noon, your order is available for pick up at an easy location (see below) in Cumming.

How much does it cost?

There is a $25 Annual Membership fee per household to cover certain expenses involved, but everything else is just dependent on how much you order. The prices on their online shopping cart are very clear & easy to understand.  Plus, you get to try the Market twice before paying the Annual Membership!

What can you purchase?

Meats, Fruits, Vegetables, Eggs, Baked Goods, Coffee, Jams & Jellies, Seafood, even Bath & Beauty Products and more!  The selection will vary from week to week or season to season just depending on the farmers’ crops – remember it’s not mass produced & the eggs aren’t coming from a warehouse of chickens!  With that in mind, shop early for the best selection!  If you wait til late Thursday to place your order, there’s a chance you’ll find some things are out of stock.

It’s easy!  Just sign up & start shopping in the Market (remember it’s only open Wednesday AM – Thursday at 8pm).  You can shop twice before paying the Annual Membership fees.

My Personal Experience?

My family used The Cumming Harvest often last year.  I really wanted to support it more, but during baseball & soccer season it was hard for me to make the pick up window.  I am hoping we can shop more often this year (and so far am off to a great start) because every time we did shop, I was so pleased!  Fruits & Vegetables were fresh, Jams, Jellies & Baked Goods were delicious and I loved getting hormone free milk & eggs!!  My most recent love is the grass fed beef – oh it so delicious!

The other really cool thing that I appreciated so much is just the experience!  The website is so easy & Suzanne & her team on Saturday mornings were always so kind & pleasant.  Even calling me when I forgot my milk one day – definitely don’t get that service during a “normal” grocery experience!  Farmers are also “spotlighted” on Saturdays, so it was neat to see who would be there each week!  If you haven’t given it a try yet, I highly recommend it!
