Food for Thought Project: Volunteer to be a Driver

I’ve been talking about the “Food for Thought Project“, for a while now. It’s one of my favorite ways to help those in need right here in Forsyth County!

If you haven’t heard about it yet, simply put, the Food for Thought Project, is a community based, ongoing door to door food drive. They currently serve Cumming & Forsyth County. It was launched in April 2011, by two local families in Cumming, GA.

Have you Signed Up?

I highly encourage all Cumming Local readers to sign up to participate (just involves filling out an online form with contact information). A bright orange reusable bag will be delivered to your doorstep. Fill the bag up with non-perishable items & on the second Saturday of every month, a volunteer will pick the bag up (from your doorstep), and leave another bag in its place! The filled bag will then be sorted & all food collected will be taken to local food pantries. The empty bag is yours to fill up again & get ready for the next pick up date!

Click here to learn more about “tips to filling up your bag” and more about “how it works”.

Can You do More?

The Food for Thought Project has picked up 21,758 lbs of food to date and has 467 families participating! Even restaurants are getting involved! Mia’s Pizza & Eats has sponsored several events and now offers a Perpetual Fundraiser to Benefit FFTP.

But today, I’m challenging you with the question “can you do more”? Every pick-up day, Food for Thought relies on volunteers to become “pick-up drivers”. These drivers are equipped with everything needed to run a successful pickup. A Food for Thought team member will deliver your route map, directions, supplies, etc. a couple of days in advance. Everything is so organized and geared towards making it as easy as possible. You simply donate your gas and your time.

It’s a GREAT family service project! This past February, my family got into the action. My husband drove, I was the co-pilot giving him directions & checking off our list, and our two children (6 & 3) were the most excited & eager volunteers I had seen!! They got super excited to see the filled bags out on the doorsteps because that meant they could run up to the house and help carry the bags down.

We started our morning at about 9am. After making all our stops (we had about a dozen – but the final number will depend on the number of drivers for each pick-up day), we delivered the food to the Food for Thought team stationed at Jason Taylor Moving & Storage. They currently donate warehouse space for Food for Thought to receive & organize food prior to dispersing it to the local food pantries. By noon the four of us were eating lunch and talking about our first morning as volunteers!

In just three hours, we were able to help our community and a great organization, but more so – we were able to give back AND get the kids involved too! It really was an awesome way for our family to spend the morning! I was humbled that we could join in!!

We aren’t able to help with the April 14th pickup, but I know for a fact we’ll be driving again for a future pickup. Will you join us?

How to Join in the Project?

1. Donate FoodAsk for a bright orange bag. It’s estimated that for every 300 people who participate, Food for Thought will collect one ton of additional food a month.

2. Invite Your Neighbors – Ask neighbors if they would like to join this program and get a bright orange bag. Maybe even head up the efforts in your neighborhood!

3. Help Transport Food – Once every 2 months, on the second Saturday, help pick up the bright orange bags. This would be a great family activity — Mom or Dad drives & the kids run get the food!

It is reserved for families that donate food first, so make sure you sign up for that first! And then take that next step to drive!

High Heels & Handbags: Benefiting FIRST

Last year I was introduced to The Zavitz family of Cumming, GA and their young little girl, Cate.  Through this, I was also introduced to “The Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Type, Inc.” (FIRST) – a national non profit devoted to the special interests of patients with Ichthyosis.  Ichthyosis is a rare genetic skin disease, characterized by dry, thick, cracked and scaling skin. Dermatologists estimate there are at least twenty varieties, ranging in severity. Approximately 16,000 babies are born each year with some form.

Through support of their friends & family, the community, local businesses, and many Cumming Local readers too, the Zavitz Family hosted a fundraising event – High Heels & Handbags to benefit FIRST.    And, I’m excited to say that the event is back!

But first … we need your help!

The 2012 High Heels & Handbags Event will be held in May & once again benefit FIRST. It will feature the sale of women’s shoes and purses, raffle and silent auction prizes, food and a cash bar.  Donations of gently used and new women’s shoes and purses, as well as raffle prizes are needed.  All donors will receive a tax deduction receipt and those donating at Cumming Local’s GNO will also receive a free ticket to HH&HB 2012 courtesy of Cumming Local.

Sam Zavitz (Cate’s Mom) will be onsite with a table at our Girl’s Night Out.  She’ll receive your items, provide you with a tax deductible receipt, answer any questions you may have & also provide you with your free ticket to the 2012 High Heels & Handbags Benefit Event!

For more information about this event or to get your business involved as a Sponsor, please contact Sam Zavitz at Sam.Zavitz@gmail.com.

Or for additional information about FIRST, visit their website – www.firstskinfoundation.org.

NOTE: If you’re not attending our Girl’s Night Out, but are still interested in donating some gently used shoes or handbags, please contact Sam directly – Sam.Zavitz@gmail.com.  Let her know you learned about the event through Cumming Local!

Food for Thought Project: Making it Easy to Get Involved

Want to make a big impact this year? In a practical way? And right here in Forsyth County?

If you haven’t signed up to participate in the “Food for Thought Project“, then it’s as simple as that!

I was so excited when I first shared this opportunity with you last year. It is something that our family supports and I thought it was so simple to get involved that everyone else should know about it too! So many of you joined in the project! And you shared with your friends & neighbors too! It’s been incredibly exciting to watch how Food for Thought has grown and I know that it will be making a huge impact in our county in 2012!

The Food for Thought Project, launched in April 2011, by two local families in Cumming, GA. Two families that I’m happy to know! They have big hearts and big dreams! They saw a need in our community and are now working to fill that need!

Simply put, the Food for Thought Project is a community based, ongoing door to door food drive. They currently serve Cumming & Forsyth County.

How Does it Work?

After signing up to participate (just involves filling out an online form with contact information), you’ll be given a bright orange reusable bag. The bag is delivered to your doorstep. Fill the bag up & on the second Saturday of every month, a volunteer will pick the bag up (from your doorstep), and leave another bag in its place! The filled bag will then be sorted & all food collected will be taken to local food pantries. The empty bag is yours to fill up again & get ready for the next pick up date!

Tips for Filling up Your Bag:

  • Each week when you go shopping, simply buy one-two extra non-perishable food items. Between each pickup, you’ll collect 8-16 items to fill your bag!
  • A reader gave me this great idea: Take your Orange Bag to the Grocery store. Fill the bag up in one trip. When you get to the check-out register, ring all items in your Orange Bag up separately. Then you’ll have a receipt for your donation AND your bag is already packed & ready to go for the next upcoming pickup! (We have SMART readers)!

Either way, it’s simple – buy some extra non-perishable items and Food for Thought does the rest!

To Date:

The Food for Thought Project has picked up 16,232 lbs of food and have 417 families participating! Even restaurants are getting involved! Mia’s Pizza & Eats has sponsored several events and just released this Press Release in which they announce a Perpetual Fundraiser to Benefit FFTP.

How to Join in the Project?

Sponsor a Foster Child this Christmas Season

Parents are out of work, jobs are scarce, and a record level of homes are in foreclosure. Even Santa Clause has been forced to tighten his belt. Hundreds of elves have been laid off during the 2011 calendar year and Santa doesn’t have enough toys for all the children.

Can you help?

Santa is seeking elves and Christmas angels to sponsor foster children and children in need this Christmas season. Sponsors will be asked to provide $75 worth of gifts to brighten a child’s Christmas morning. Each child will receive 2 to 3 articles of clothing and 2 to 3 gifts. If you’re a bargain shopper, you don’t even have to spend $75! Others may be interested in sponsoring an entire family. Options are available for all budgets. Santa needs your help to make sure all the children on the nice list are remembered this Christmas.

Are you a family in need?

Act Together has a registration form & process that you can complete to be considered.  Please click here to find that information.

I Hate Cancer …

“I Hate Cancer.”

That’s certainly not an uncommon thought.  Cancer is one of those words that sets an emotion off for everyone.   For some, we think about someone that is currently fighting cancer.  For others, it’s someone that is in remission.  And still for others it’s someone that died from the disease.  Some can even think of people in each of those categories.  That “someone” is a son, daughter, mother, father, son, sister, friend or even yourself.

For me, two people first come to mind – my friend that died from Hodgkins in 1993 and my Aunt that died in 1999 from what started out as breast cancer.  I wrote about my feelings 10 years after loosing my Aunt, here.

But even with the heartbreak of loss,  I know that research is done every day that is ultimately saving lives!  Researching that is giving many friends and loved ones a second chance.

Many of those that need a second chance right now, are in our community … in Cumming, GA & Forsyth County.

I have been in awe, as I have watched the Stick It 2 Cancer team raise OVER $40,000 (FORTY-THOUSAND DOLLARS) towards Cancer Research.  Their original goal was $40,000.  But when they surpassed that last week they didn’t stop.  They just raised the bar instead!  They are joining in this weekend’s Light the Night Walk (Georgia Chapter) for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).   This will be the first time the event has taken place in Cumming.  And the Cumming walk (at Cumming Fairgrounds) will join walks all over as they raise funds for lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers & treatments for other types of cancer, such as chemotherapy & stem cell transplants.

I have a Challenge for You:

I know we all have different organizations and non-profits that we give to – either on a regular basis or throughout the entire year.  But if we join in together, it won’t take much.  What if every Cumming Local Facebook fan gave just $1?   We’d donated over $1000 to the Stick it 2 Cancer’s donation.  What if we each gave just $2.  Or even $5.  It doesn’t have to be much.  Can we help them reach their goal by this weekend’s walk?

Will you consider giving?  The Stick it 2 Cancer team is made up of our neighbors & local businesses in Cumming & Forsyth County.  But the funds will go to help cancer research & fight a disease that we all hate!!

So, Cumming Local Readers … can we give?  Click here to donate.

Food for Thought – Get Involved

If you’ve been reading Cumming Local for the last few months, you’ve probably caught on that I love the “Food for Thought” Project.  It is such a practical & easy way for neighbors to help neighbors!  If you’ve missed our posts about them, then here’s a little run down …

Food for Thought is a door-to-door food collection program that will help provide a steady supply of food to Food Pantries in Cumming and Forsyth County.

Why is it so practical & easy?

Because after signing up, you’ll receive an orange reusable grocery bag (they drop it off on your front door step).  The idea is that each time you’re at the grocery store, you’ll pick up one or two extra non-perishable items and store them in your orange bag.  Then you simply leave your orange bag on your door step on the morning of pickup.  Your full bag is picked up & replaced with another bag to start all over!   They only come every month, so it’s not an overwhelmingly huge commitment.  Like I said, practical & easy!

the Food for Thought project does not focus strictly on the holidays – in fact, they would say that’s not their focus at all.  Their mission is to support pantries and those in need throughout the entire  year.  However, with that being said, the holidays are obviously very busy for food pantries throughout the county!  So additional food is most definitely needed!

They have a goal:

To get to 300 orange bag families by the October 8th pick up.  Can you help??  Sign up now!

Here’s a few ways you can step in:
1. Sign Up for your Orange Bag – The next donation pick up date is Saturday, October 8th.  Please consider signing up now so you can get involved on that pickup!

2. Help in their “Piggyback Efforts” – Because of the holidays, many food pantries will need extra “holiday food”.  With that in mind, Food for Thought is asking you to consider donating an extra & optional “Thanksgiving Piggyback Bag” for the October 8th pick up.  We would like to ask you to do an optional “Thanksgiving Piggyback Bag” which would be in addition to your regular donations.  These items will be distributed to the food pantries closer to Thanksgiving.  We are asking for these “Piggyback” bags to contain canned hams and other canned meats (non-refrigerated) or gift card and cash donations so that we can purchase items to fill in any holes in the food pantries needs as we get closer to Thanksgiving.

Please place the “Piggyback” items in a regular grocery bag and set the bag our with your bright orange bag.  The volunteers will be keeping them separate.

3. Volunteer – Drivers are need to pick up food.  Pick up only happens on one Saturday morning every two months.  Are you available to volunteer?  Contact Food for Thought for more information.

4.  Donate Storage Space – Food for Thought is in need of storage space – centrally located in Cumming where all of the volunteers could deliver their collections.  Big enough for (hopefully) 4,000 pounds of food and a group of people organizing and consolidating.  The space would not be needed long – simply Saturday October 8th through Monday morning October 10th when they would distribute to the local pantries.  Contact Food for Thought if you can help fill this need.

5.  Eat at Mia’s Pizza & Eats: How easy is that!!!  Mia’s Pizza & Eats is giving you a 10% discount whenever customers bring 2 cans of non-perishable items to be contributed to their Food for Thought Donation box!!  Items should be brought in the week of October 1st – 8th.  This offer is for dine-in only.
